Jesus the gear oil is expensive

Hit 30k and I do tow quite a bit. At the dealership getting my oil changed. Priced out 3 quarts of 75w-80 "axle" oil and 2 quarts of ATF +4.

Axle- $49.05 per qt
ATF - $8.10 per qt

Comes out to just under $180 with tax, ouch. Having it done here will be over $320.

Just checked online while still waiting for them to finish up. Online, looks like the oils will run me about $150 shipped.

Decided to buy it at the dealer, so I could have the receipt on hand, and they will also have the purchase history in case of warranty issues, since I have lifetime warranty.

And I thought Royal Purple was expensive. Good grief.

Re: Jesus the gear oil is expensive

That price for the axle gear oil is insane. It's just synthetic gear oil.

I don't doubt that's what the dealer is charging for it, but seriously that's a good 4X a reasonable price.

Contact Mcarter@dcmoto.net for the best prices on Amsoil fluids. Better oils, less mark up and they meet Chrysler material standards.
BTW, why did you buy ATF? It isn't due till 60 something I thought.

Re: Jesus the gear oil is expensive

WK2jeeps shows it should be 75W-85, was that a typo?

Redline sells 75W-85 for $17/qt on amazon.

Or just run 75W-90 that you can find at any auto parts store. A quick google search tells me a lot of Toyota guys run that in their diffs with no issues.

This sounds a lot like the WJ Overland problem of NV247 fluid costing almost $50/qt. If you didn't run it, the $400 part in the TC would wear out and go bad.

Re: Jesus the gear oil is expensive

W-O-W!!! I only tow a 4 wheeler, occasionally my motorcycle if I need to take it to the bike store, that IS expensive and I now consider myself VERY lucky when a close friend did all the fluids on my Wrangler (200,000+),in exchange for a set of 35's tires I had never used.(tires I picked up for $150 a few months ago)feel I ought pay for him to have them mounted now.
I am a LONG time Jeep owner and have had the Wranglers life blood changed a few times front to back but my wife always took it in and never made any observations on the cost.
Never had the JGC fluids touched other than regular oil changes(mind you only just clicked over to 26,000 that's our '11 and the '15 only has 3,000) it never occurred to me that a $320 Dealership charge to deal with the JGC fluids.I don't think it's overpriced(just highly prize and value my Jeeps) but I do think it's expensive.Reason I say not overpriced is I do expect to pay more at the Dealership, that's my preference as I want all records in one place.
I consider myself forewarned, thanks for the original post!!

I figured if I'm doing the diff, might as well do the transfer case too. But the transfer case was pristine. Sure, slightly darker than fresh oil, but not much.

75w-85 appears to be the correct oil. They do have the old part number for the AFT+4.

The new part number for 75w-85 axle oil is 5136035AB.
The new part number for ATF+4 is 68218057AB.

I don't know what's so special about Mopar's axle oil and why it's so expensive. But I don't want to be the person to find out the diffs will take a shit with other brands of oil.

Re: Jesus the gear oil is expensive

They won't...

If I remember correctly, it's a GL4 oil, not GL5, but that doesn't matter typically. There are some examples of some GL5's degrading softer metals iirc.. The gear oil says "crossfire" on it, so it's pricey because it's basically mercedes spec oil.. Whooptie doo... I replaced mine with Amsoil severe gear. I've got posts on this forum about my search for an alternative. The oil I was going to get was like 8 years old in the bottle for one thing.. Any the service manager at my dealer said it was fine and he'd never refuse a warranty claim for "wrong brand" oil use..

All I can say is I did that 30000 miles ago without a hitch from the drivetrain. About time for a change come to think of it..

I take all the money I save on stuff like this and put it in my virtual piggy bank as a substitute for a lifetime warranty.. I'm sure I'm thousands ahead.

A lifetime warranty is really a lifetime promise to keep reciepts, buy overpriced labor and parts, and never miss a change date or modify your vehicle. What's that worth? (Sorry, not bashing anyone here, just the reality I've seen)

Re: Jesus the gear oil is expensive

You could run amsoil for a fraction of that price... Probably a bit overkill for that application, but a lot cheaper.
