Re: JGC Laredo '14 - Wheel and Tire Fit Question

Hi PineTar! I owned several heavy duty 3/4 ton pickups in the past for pulling horse trailers etc. and always ran Load Range E tires to be safe; and I believe I am correct in saying that Load Range E tires are usually 10 ply tires; built so they won't come apart on a 95 degree day pulling 8000lbs etc.etc. I would think that a 10 ply tire on a Grand Cherokee might make for a harsh ride and not so great handling because of their "stiffness" but I may be wong?! Not sure, Dave

Hey Dave. Thanks for your reply.

You are correct that load E tires are 10ply and primarily used for heavier trucks that tow. But although they are best when used under those conditions, it doesn't mean they can't be used on Jeeps like ours that do tow at times and the WK2's appear to be just as heavy as some of these trucks that always use load E range tires. My curiosity is really that people are too quick to say that these Jeeps will be harsh with higher load tires, especially when we probably have better suspension than these trucks and the PSI can be compensated for times when not towing or driving on the street.

Possibly anyone who does use load E on their WK2 could chime in with their experience...

Re: JGC Laredo '14 - Wheel and Tire Fit Question

Yes I agree, someone that has run "E's" on a Grand Cherokee is best way to find out short of doing it yourself. FWIW my current Chevy K2500 tow machine has General Grabbers on it (superb on wet roads) and when towing in the summer months they get 65 to 68lbs.cold, non towing days no less than 55 lbs.cold or they will wear badly and cup. So I do not know what that would feel like on a Jeep GC with E's running that kind of pressure? Also, I saw the AT3's and would have bought them if the tire shop could not have gotten me Snow tires, they were my next choice. Good luck, Dave

Re: JGC Laredo '14 - Wheel and Tire Fit Question

A jgc is like 5000 lb. and my 2500 ram is around 5800 lb. LW. on e's.

So i think the ride might not be that bad.I never go cheap on tires or bat.

I agree that the weight similarities bring it right up alongside many vehicles that need E load tires, but yet again, I just question the trade offs.

These ST Maxxs are hard to put a specific weight number on, as the only confirmation I've seen is actual owners who put them on the scales. They seem about 5lbs heavier than TreadDepot actually has them listed as, bringing each in around 60lbs. That's about 20lbs heavier than the Dynapro ATM and Cooper AT3. That much extra weight on each end would absolutely kill the ride and power, I'd imagine.

So again, I digress and think I should be smart and get one of the lighter choices, even though I dig these other Discoverer Maxxs so much.

Re: JGC Laredo '14 - Wheel and Tire Fit Question

Also seeing more drivers using the new Wrangler AT Adventure and am liking the look of them. It sounds like they are performing well for everyone so far.

Wrangler All-Terrain Adventure Tires by Goodyear

Hopefully these don't have any recalls like the Silent Armors did, otherwise they will stay in contention among the others previously listed.

Ended up with the GY Wrangler AT Adventures and have been very happy with their performance and looks, even though they aren't as aggressive as I originally hoped for in a tire.

These were definitely the best choice for my driving situations and I'm looking forward to testing the off road performance soon!

So far, they are smoother and quieter than the stock Forteras and have done almost as well as my Blizzaks in snowy/cold conditions.

I also can't complain that I got full credit towards returning the imperfect Forteras for these!

Let us know how they work out, could be a good option when my Lattitudes are shot. Did you consider the Mich MS 2's ? Dave

I honestly didn't consider the MS-2's much at all because I saw how expensively they are priced. They sound like one of the best tires for the WK2 if you do mostly highway and city driving, but I didn't like the looks of them for off road ability compared to these other ones I've already mentioned.

I'll definitely keep a running update on the Adventures though.
