Minor accident

Had someone hit me directly on the rear rim. Insurance only wants to pay for rim + 1 tire. I'm used to replacing at least two. 2014 jeep grand summit diesel, 4wd drive II, select. 1, 2 or all 4? current tires are at 6-7. Anything prone to damage with that kind of hit? Alignment will be done.

Re: Minor accident

All four tires really need to be at the same diameter (4x4) or at least the same on the same axel for 4x2---and at 6-7/32", you're nearly due for new tires all around.

As to damage, "how" you were hit and from what angle could have any number of implications.

Re: Minor accident

I know page 487 in the owners manual says to replace 2, are there any other reference I can point out to the insurance company?

Re: Minor accident

Do you have a 4x2? If yes, than replacing two makes sense. (as long as they are on the same axel) If your manual says that, then present that fact to the insurance company. You may not get it, but if they don't pay, I suggest you pony up for the second tire to be sure you don't affect warranty, etc.

Re: Minor accident

I'd check the hub too, I have seen those get bent. Then your new tire will wobble.

Re: Minor accident

If you have 4WD, then all four tires need to be within a very small margin of the same diameter. I'll go back to my previous statement that you likely should replace all four. You cannot have "new" tires on the back and worn tires on the front with the 4WD system...it can cause drive train issues. That unfortunately means you may need to pony up for three of the four corners if your insurance will not cover it. It's one of the few risks we all have running full-time 4WD vehicles.

Re: Minor accident

Is there a definitive specification on the delta allowed that I can get the insurance company to understand. Since this was not my fault, I get to arm twist the insurance company. Been searching on line but can't find a document.

new is 10/32, 3% is actually 6/32, which is not quite bald. Firestone's # for AWD is 2/32 difference.
