Minor wheel damage advice

Yesterday while I was pulling up to the payment booth in a parking garage, I got a little too close and bumped the curb. I had hoped that I only rubbed it with the tire, but since I've got the 20 inch wheels I found that I had scraped the wheel a little. There were some yellow and black smudges that I could rub off, but there are a lot remaining along with scratches.

I have attached a photo. It is a relatively small area that is damaged, but I know it is there and it jumps out at me every time I walk by. For the first blemish on the vehicle, I think a door ding would have bothered me less.

I have tried to scrub off the black marks, but no success. I can't afford to replace the wheel and wouldn't do it for such a small blemish. Any advice on how to make the scratches less visible?

Re: Minor wheel damage advice

I recommend touching it up with the closest paint match you can for now and brush on some clearcoat. If salt or some other oxident gets under the paint to the aluminum wheel the rest of the paint will peel!

Re: Minor wheel damage advice

There are wheel repair companies that can come by in a van (with all the req equipment and paint) and get any wheel back to new condition for a fraction of the cost of a new one. On wheels as nice as yours I wouldn't bother doing the repair yourself, you'll never get it looking perfect and getting it professionally fixed should be relatively cheap as the damage is very minor.

If you decide to tackle it yourself, I would get get some very fine to fine sandpaper and rub out the scratches and then add some clear to protect.

Re: Minor wheel damage advice

xmonger, thanks for the idea on the rim repair companies. It hadn't occurred to me that there are companies specializing in that sort of thing. A google search returned a couple of local companies that do this. I have quote requests out to them.

Re: Minor wheel damage advice

I slid into a curb with my moms grand prix a few years ago, bent the lip of the 17" twisted 5 spoke that was on there and had a fair amount of curb rash. I think it cost about $150 to have it repaired and you could not tell which one was fixed. These places really can do a good job. However this wheel had to be sent in, I think they said they had to add melt down and add aluminum. So I cannot speak for the repair vans.

On a side note, has anybody looked into tires for these 20"s that have the flap of rubber that goes over the lip of the rim to protect it from damage like this? Like the bfg all terrain or mud terrain but more of a street/all season tire. I don't know if it exists.

Re: Minor wheel damage advice

If anyone has a recommendation for a good company that provides wheel repair service in Northeast Ohio, please let me know. Thanks.

Re: Minor wheel damage advice

File a comp claim. Tell your claims rep you drove into a curb, rubbed the rim and now its damaged. It's covered minus your deductible. Always keep a 0$ ded. for comp, it comes in handy.

Re: Minor wheel damage advice

and ps, after seeing the pic of the damage, there is no way you could bring that rim back to new on your own. rim repair is the ticket if you arent replacing it.

I put Firestone Destination ST (ST stands for Sport Truck) on my Ford Adrenalin. The are 275/45/20 which replaced the 255/50/20. So far the are quiet and seem to be wearing well. We've had snow and I've gotten around well, but these are street tires, not off road tires. They do have a bead along the rim flange, but the reality is, if you get next to a curb in a near 5,000 vehicle with these wheels, you will damage them.

(Sorry about the fithly wheels/tires - the weather has been nasty here)

ADD: Tire Rack was MUCH cheaper than my local Firestone dealer. I took a priced print-out from Tire Rack and Firestone matched it saving me about $200. from the orig. Firestone price.
