Mystery Nut In The Driveway/Suspension Creak

Hello. About four days ago, after returning from an 1100 mile trip towing a 3500 lb trailer, I noticed a creaking in the suspension that sounds like it's coming from the right front. The sound is noticeable only when the body rolls in a way that distributes weight to the right front of the vehicle. Breaking that causes a moderate shift to the front usually produces the creak, and a sharp left turn at a significant enough angle to roll the body to the right always produces it. It is easily reproducible doing counter-clockwise donuts in a parking lot. However, I hear no noise going over bumps in a straight line or when making right turns.

Yesterday, my wife spotted this nut in the driveway near the track of the right side of the Jeep when I pull into the garage.

See attachments.

The nut appears to be pretty new and reasonably heavy for its size. Anybody know to what bolt this nut belongs? Does it have anything to do with my recent suspension issues? Thanks for the help.

This could be the nut which secures the sway bar end link. It looks to be about the right size. It could be from either the driver or passenger side, and would produce the same effect.

It would explain your suspension issues and the creak.

Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU! This is exactly the kind of intel I was hoping for. I have an appointment with the dealer tomorrow morning. Now I have a concrete direction in which to send the service tech.

That was my plan. I figured if I had a piece of Jeep hardware in my hand, the techs would be less inclined to think I'm another picky crackpot hearing phantom noises. I am a picky crackpot who hears phantom noises, but this instance is not evidence of that.

Kinda looks like the nut from this TSB: http://www.wk2jeeps.com/tsb/tsb_wk2_1100314.pdf.

Notice any rattling?

No. That isn't it. I looked at that TSB previously. It applies only to gas engines. I have a diesel. There is no heat shield on the diesel like the one in the photo. Plus, the nut in the TSB is a different color. The one I found is not silver. It's a much darker grayish brown -- much closer to black than silver.

In any event, I took my Jeep to the dealer yesterday. The techs couldn't identify the nut and couldn't replicate the creak. Of course, when I went on a road trip with them after they'd had it up on the rack and poked around for a couple of hours, I couldn't replicate it either. I guess I'll just have to wait for it to come back and try to do a better job of localizing the sound.

Picking around the forum, I read a post that had an audio recording of a creak that sounded a lot like mine and was reproducible with a low speed right turn (mine was left). Turned out to be the control arm. But that wouldn't explain the nut I found. The control arm is also secured with silver nuts.

Well, if your missus finds another one like it in the driveway, at least you'll have a mating pair...

Wouldn't that have to be a bolt?
