New 18" Mud Terrain tire size coming soon to OZ.

Hi All,

I've been going nuts trying to find a legal sized MT to suit my MY15 JGC. I know that there are the Achilles 265/65R18 Desert Hawk X-MT available, but I wanted to go a little taller without going illegal - in NSW at least.

I just found out that there will be imported the Achilles Desert Hawk X-MT in a LT285/65R18 and should be in Australia in November 2016. This is apparently a new sized tire just developed to suit JGC and other models (that don't count here or course..)

The overall size will be 799 mm - up from the standard 775 mm - making it just legal. It is also to be a 10 ply 122 rating, which should be a LT rating, which is also good news. I know there are guys running 275/65R18s but these are rubbing wheel arches and are, in NSW at least, over the limit allowed. I would hate to be involved in an accident an be told that I could be liable because my tires were illegal.

I've attached info on the tyre. It says "coming soon" on the 285/60R18 but it's going to be here in November as told to me by the Australian agent.

BTW, I don't work for the tire company - just in case you were thinking!! I know you were thinking that!!

The 285/65/18 is taller and wider than the 275/65/18.....so it appears to me if your worried the 275 will rub the 285 will rub more? Maybe I'm confused.....

Hi Grimmjpr. The rubbing is not necessarily from the with (only 10 mm wider each side) but from the overall diameter. The standard tires are 265/60R18 which have an overall diameter of 775 mm. The 285/60R18 have an overall diameter of 799mm = 12 mm more top and bottom. Any more than this could and has caused rubbing in the inner wheel arch. Ideally I would prefer say a 265/65R18 but unfortunately there are no Light Truck MT available - only the BFG All Terrains.

Hope this helps.

Oops! I meant that there is only 265/60R18 Desert Hawk X-MT only available and NOT the 265/65R18 as per my original post. I wish there was! That's why the 285/60R18 coming in November is good news.

My 275/65/18 MT tyres dont rub. Well they did but only where the liner had come loose. I have quadralift as well and they are fine in park height. Im considering going bigger again 33inch.

Whenever you do, let us all know how they fit and go. Thanks for your comments.
