If the diameter of the spare varies from the "regular" tires by more than a very small amount, there is potential damage to the 4x4 drivetrain. Even though it's not "locked", function can be affected if one wheel is turning at a different rate than its mates...
While you "probably" wouldn't do damage in a mile or three, most folks end up traveling far further on their spare than they realize. Best practice is to match the diameter.
