Nitto Terra Grapplers (max size for overland?)

I see there are a few threads on this. Is the official final answer the 275/55/20?

I only have 25,500 on my factory tires, but these look like a solid replacement option when the time comes. I drive around in sport mode most of the time, which lowers the car 1.5" I believe. Is there any rubbing issues with the larger tire or should I stick to the factory sizes?

Thanks

Re: Nitto Terra Grapplers (max size for overland?)

I had the Nitto Terra Grappler G2 installed yesterday in 275/55/20. Previous tire was OEM 265/50/20. When rear tire was installed tech noticed that the tires rubbed a little on inner wheel well felt lining in one area. He simply screwed down inner felt in that area and now perfect.

I did testing today in all all modes including, entry/exit, normal, OR1, OR2 and Aero mode on highway. There was zero rubing or hitting in any mode. Even in entry/exit made I did full steering wheel sharp turns with no rubbing.

I am very pleased with tire and size.

Re: Nitto Terra Grapplers (max size for overland?)

The G2 is unique in the fact that it's an AT tire that comes in the popular 275/55r20 and stock 265/50r20.

If you don't want or need the 3/4" lift or thicker sidewall then you can't beat OEM size. If you want those things, the larger tire works pretty well with every AT tire on QL vehicles at normal height.

What do you mean by he screwed the felt on the liner. I'm going to go with that size tire on my overland also and was curious if there were any issues.

I'll try my best. Inside the rear wheel well is a hard felt type liner. The liner towards front of rear wheel well is not tacked against inner wheel well. It actually is off of it about an inch, so if you poke the felt part with your finger the felt liner would push back into inner wheel well.

When rear tires installed he noticed front inner rear tire was touching felt. He thought this would eventually rub hole into felt. This I didn't like so instead he realized he could simply push the felt liner back and tack it to inner wheel well with screw or zippy. I chose screwing in back.

I'll try to take a picture.

Here is pic from my previous post:

I have arrow pointing to area that has three layers, inner layer closet to tire is the felt liner I refer to, right now there is about a 1/2" or little more between the three layers and the tire.

The area that rubbed is actually a couple inches above arrow, but arrow shows you layers.

When tire was installed this felt was separated from the other two layers rubbing, so he just tacked felt to inner liners with couple of screws.

I have over 200 miles hwy, city and off-road and no issues. I tested all modes.

I am very happy. Tires are a little louder than Fortera OEM because they are more aggressive AT tire, but additional notice isn't bad at all. I expected them to be louder but they are not loud, Loud is relative term to person experiencing it so your experience may differ.

Let me know if this helps or not.

Re: Nitto Terra Grapplers (max size for overland?)

Ok, great. That makes sense and was very helpful. Thank you. I'll try to get in there while I have the stock wheels on and screw it all down.

I'm not worried about the road noise. I figured there would be some. But nothing the radio or intake noise won't cover up. I do appreciate you're help and all the info. I'm going to start getting the wheels and tires ordered.

Re: Nitto Terra Grapplers (max size for overland?)

Good luck, although they have a little more road noise from rolling I think they takes bumps and road imperfections softer than 265/50/20 Fortera's.

Even with radio off I don't think noise much. City driving I barely even notice.

Re: Nitto Terra Grapplers (max size for overland?)

I'll probably end up doing factory sizes. I don't really need the truck to be lifted any higher. I don't drive much with it anyways and I live in the suburbs of chicago, so we do see some good snow in the winter. The factory tires have impressed me so far, but I'm sure these would be an improvement.

The goodyear Forteras that came with my jeep were great in snow. actually they are all around really good tire. i only changed to get something beefier and more AT tire.
