Off-road wheel options

Hiya all,

Well as a proud, if somewhat angry WK2 Overland CRD owner, I am planning a trip west from Brisbane, turn right at the rock and then follow the coast all the way around.

Now I'm angry as there are still no real front or rear bars for out ride, and these are pretty much required for what I am planning. Real front bar for a good winch and protection, and rear bar for high-lift jacks, twin spares (have a water bladder for the underfloor wheel well).

But, what sort of wheels? Anyone have any luck with finding some good steelies that are 18" or 17" (and fit)?

Re: Off-road wheel options

With the amount of plastic covering the WK2, custom bumpers would be your only option. Mopar rock sliders for the side would be a good option and look sturdy enough to high lift off.

Re: Off-road wheel options

I'm not much on steelies because of the added sprung weight which is already high with LTs but can't complain about their toughness. Personally I would like to see some sturdier alloys. With the heavy duty discs on the 18" wheels, there is little space between the rim well and the calliper. If the right sized gibber jambs itself in there one could end up with instant split rims.

Yoda - yes, I just found them the other day. Apparently about September? $1,700 or there abouts?

Bob - I know that the steels are a little heavier but was thinking that as I would generally be going at a comfortably slow speed and just want the ability for repair if required.

The trip is going to be rather long, I mean BNE to the rock, north to Darwin and then follow the coast (pretty much) around past Perth and home again. Should be able to manage that in 2 months. Currently looking at heading off in 8 months time. Would have been much sooner had I got a 'common' 4wd.

Gear to get that is out or being 'finished' is the long-ranger 76l tank, Uneek front bar and winch, Rocky-road sliders and roof rack. I have a bladder being drawn up now to sit in the rear wheel well for fresh water.

Gear I need to find, rear bar for spares and such and some rear draws.

Should be easy enough right? ......yeah, in a 'common' 4wd.....

Thanks for that. If anyone has some time, have a look at the ARB FB page, and comment on the "new bar" they have made for the Colorado 7. Make one for something that's been out 6 months but still no GC one in sight from them.

They don't even have the WK2 listed in their vehicle drop-down box.
