Overland Quadra Lift Stiffness.

The other day i was tooling around with the quadra lift at max height...went over a coupl bumps and it sounded like the wheels bottomed out...a loud clunk and i wasn't even driving that fast. Didn't seem right.

i'm guessing the quadra lift just keeps making the suspension stiffer and stiffer the high up it goes?

You dont lift the whole suspension, you just put more height (eg extending the "air springs") whereas the dampers remain the same (as well in length)

in consequence, if the Lift is at max haight you have only very limited "negative" travel in the dampers, so the dampers stop at their limiters pretty fast (eg clunk)
Thus you should go only very slow.

Its not a bug, its a feature!

I noticed this as well on my first off-road trip. I had it in OR1 and OR2 occassionally as I was worried about ground clearance. I definitely could hear the suspension bottoming out and it was hard to listen to, hopefully no damage is done due to this. I dropped it back to NRH and still had enough clearance and it smoothed the ride out and reduced the clunking to almost none. I personally just need to get used to the ride height to determine when I actually need to raise it and when NRH will do the job.

Hopefully skid plates and rock rails in my future and I'll feel more confident I won't rip something out from under the car.

Both Off-Road ride heights can be very rough, and the occasional "WHAM!" out of nowhere is disconcerting.

What helps enormously is reducing your tire pressures. If you are going to be creeping along a bumpy trail for more than a half hour or so, it is definitely worth your time to deflate your tires down to 15-20 psi. It makes a huge difference in your comfort and in reducing the forces the suspension is subjected to.

I bring along an air compressor that plugs into the inverter so I can re-inflate them when I'm done.

Yeah there is basically no suspension rebound at full extension (OR2), so what you are hearing are the contact with the rebound bumpers. No damage some wear and tear. There was quite a bit of discussion about a year ago.

Now the compression bumpers can be damaged/wore out pretty quick by riding when the QL fails (no air).

OR2 is only for very slow rock crawling. (Yes I am captain obvious to some here)
OR1 is great for general offroad up to 40MPH or so.

Great advice here. May be obvious to some but airing down makes a huge difference in ride comfort while off road. It's like adding another layer of shock protection plus added traction.

I experienced the harshness of non aired down tires my first time off-road. It was exacerbated because these falken rocky mountains have some stiff sidewalls. Great for the road but definitely could have been aired down a bit for offroad use.
