Puncture in Tire

Long story short had puncture in tire. Tire is new with only 5500 miles. Took to Firestone and they patched it from the inside. Noticed decrease in air day by day so took it back to another Firestone for them to repatch. Second Firestone first said it was a problem with the initial patch. Then 25 min later says they cannot repatch it cause hole is too big. Says I will have to get new tire. I smelled scam so told them to put tire back and I'll be on my way. They said they couldn't do that for liability reason so they put my spare on. New 20" Goodyear Fortera tire is $260. Fudge that America Tire was selling for $160 so I left.

In the end I went to another tire company and they patched it for me for free and now it's fine.

My question is should I be concerned about my repatched tire? I'm afraid that in the summer on 100 degree asphalt and driving 90 mph wld be dangerous or will it be fine?

Any tire experts?

Re: Puncture in Tire

Any patched tire has slightly more risk than unpatched tire.

The fact the first patch leaked is suspect that it is a large hole. It's pretty hard to screw up a small patch.

Some tire guys don't care and will patch anything.

It will probably be fine but just don't go over 50mph

Re: Puncture in Tire

Size and location of the patch matter and as ms' mentioned, some folks will patch "anything" and others are more careful with size and location.

While it's a pain to pay for a new tire, sometimes that's the better choice for safety and performance. And Forteras are "cheap" compared to many other tire choices.

Re: Puncture in Tire

If it couldn't be plugged, then it probably was a large hole. Get a new tire. You have so few miles you probably just need to replace one and not all 4.

The repair was done by Americas Tire, aka Discount Tire.
I would have gone there first, as they will patch any repairable tire free.

America/Discount Tire is usually pretty good at telling you whether or not a repair is a good idea vs a new tire--suppose there are some stores that aren't but it really isn't in their best interest to do so.

What put the hole in the tire, and is it near the edge of the tire?
A nail/screw puncture, no big deal if repaired by a tech with a pulse.
Rock gash, glass cut, etc. where you can see damage on the tread at all, I'd be very inclined to consider the worth of the vehicle and my body vs a tire.

I would be concerned driving 90 mph on good tires.

The hole exceeded the patch as in picture. It was a gash right in the middle of the tire.

Yeah Goodyear Forteras are not that expensive as other tires but still $. I think I was just miffed that 1st Firestone store patched it and 2nd said they couldn't and wanted me to buy new tire. And yes I would only need to change one tire. However if patch works I wld prefer not to replace it.

Re: Puncture in Tire

I'm assuming you haven't changed out OE tires and have a full size spare. Why not just remount your spare on the rim in question and used the patched one for a spare?

Simple answer...the full size spare is on an 18" wheel and the Forteras are on 20" wheels. But even if he had 18" rims on the four corners, the spare is a different, narrower tire size, but of the same diameter as required for 4wD systems. (~30.6")
