Re: Question about Sport mode

The QL is definitely stiffer, I switched back after a few miles.

Re: Question about Sport mode

Sport mode basically sets the Quadra-Lift at the same setting as Aero which kicks in a highway cruising speeds. If I'm on a non-express highway with slowdowns, stop signs, etc, it's handy to switch to Sport simply to prevent the Quadra-Lift pump/compressor from having to work too hard raising and lowering for no good reason.

Also, in my previous post above I didn't mention that the Selec-Terrain knob also affects the 4WD system, and again this kicks in almost immediately.

Re: Question about Sport mode

I'm curious at the QL comments about it becoming stiffer. QL does not have variable shock damping and can only either add air to the bags or take air out. In theory, aero mode would be a slightly softer spring rate which would make the damping slightly stiffer. So it should feel a little stiffer in transitions but roll more in long corners.

Conversely, when QL is raised all the way up you can visually see the spring rates are near solid as the bags are filled and there is virtually no suspension movement.

R0t0r,

I'm just speculating here, but if the springs were variable rate, then by raising or lowering, you would also stiffness, right?

Re: Question about Sport mode

All the literature as well as some recorded conversations indicates that the QL does not include dynamic shocks meaning the suspension does not get stiffer under any setting. All that occurs is the air pressure is reduced in the shocks to lower the vehicle 1/2" (aka Aero Mode). However, it is possible to engineer the air sleeves to provide a higher spring rate the lower the vehicle rides. To do this the bladder is encapsulated within a sleeve so when the vehicle is lower more of the bladder is contained within the sleeve so the bladder can't expand as much thereby giving you a higher spring rate. As you raise the vehicle more of the bladder is above the sleeve so it can flex more for a given load thereby providing a LOWER spring rate the higher the vehicle is riding. I have no idea is the QL is designed this way but that may account for the firmer feeling in sport mode.

Re: Question about Sport mode

There ate no traditional springs with QL - only the airbags themselves which are variable rate by nature ( 0 fully deflated and obnoxious high fully inflated). I've never seen a system that can take air out of the bag and increase its spring rate.

Usually to have a stiffer sport mode, variable dampers are used that let you turn up damping forces so its stiffer in transitions

Give these guys a call, they can explain in detail how to engineer a variable rate air spring that gets stiffer the lower it goes. http://www.arnottindustries.com/

Re: Question about Sport mode

You would see less body roll due to lower center of gravity as well.

Another fun one while in Sport Mode (or any mode, just more appropriate in Sport Mode) is move your shift lever to the left (leave 5 indicated, if not there, shift up until it gets there), I like this when playing around

Is it faster that way due to the different gears usaed?

I don't know what the technical working are behind it but it doesn't go into ECO mode and I think uses the same shifting as the TOW/HAUL mode does with the underdrive gear.

I know, those guys are right down the road and they know their stuff. With the success of the WK2 and the prevalence of the Overlands with QL it's only a matter of time before these guys get their hands on it and start doing rebuilds and possibly some aftermarket. It's all about volume and the WK2 could end up having a higher volume of cars on the road than a lot of what they already make parts for.
