Remove Hubcaps/wheel cover?

Hello,
I have a 2012 Grand cherokee Laredo with the 18' chrome wheels. I was going to get them powdercoated but then realized they are just chrome covers/hubcaps. Are these removable? If so, how? I really don't want to break them or any tabs off, it certainly looks like they come off. I can't get the stock tire iron deep enough to take the nuts off so they must come off! Has anyone taken these off and painted them? I really have searched all through out the forum. I can't find the answer I'm sorry. All help is appreciated.

Re: Remove Hubcaps/wheel cover?

Don't think they're hubcaps if they're OEM.

Re: Remove Hubcaps/wheel cover?

Yep those shouldn't be hubcaps. I'm assuming you're not the original owner of your Jeep. If not, maybe the previous owner put chrome covers on them. See the link below & hope this helps.

Re: Remove Hubcaps/wheel cover?

I don't think he's referring to actual hubcaps... I believe he's talking about factory chrome clad wheels. I couldn't say whether the cladding is removable or not.

Re: Remove Hubcaps/wheel cover?

Well I'm the second owner so I suppose they could be those covers. Here is a pic of the backside of the wheel. I had read that some of the previous model grand cherokees had a cover that was not removable so that's what i was thinking. It's a laredo but has pretty much every convenience option so I don't know what other packages have been added. It definitely looks like a cover. The jeep center cap is actually a little recessed from the chrome "cover".

Re: Remove Hubcaps/wheel cover?

Those look like OEM factory chrome clad wheels to me. From the back side they look like they should be removable. Though like you said, how do you do it without breaking those tabs?

Re: Remove Hubcaps/wheel cover?

Older Dodge Ram used those chrome clad wheels.

While you could remove them with some force, I don't believe you could re-attach them back on afterwards as they usually broke during removal.

Plasti-dip might be a good option in your situation.

Re: Remove Hubcaps/wheel cover?

Yeah I'm thinking i might just have to plasti-dip. What's odd is that because of this "cover" or whatever I can't even use the supplied lug wrench. Its too thick. Frustrating...

Re: Remove Hubcaps/wheel cover?

Get some nice wheels and take those to the recycler.

Re: Remove Hubcaps/wheel cover?

Yeah I'd love just the black altitude ones but no one sells those affordably. I like the black Rubicon ones. Although I haven't seen a straight answer on whether or not those fit.
