Re: Snow!! Not so good...

For non believers in snow tires, you should really go out there and drive two identical cars with snow tires and all-seasons.

At the same event earlier this year when we drove on frozen lake, they had 2 Audi Q5s. One had all-seasons and the other, snow tires. The difference was very big between the vehicles. I did not even know that they had this set up until I drove the one with all-seasons. It handled crappy (relatively speaking) and kept sliding and was having a hard time gripping the snow to pull out of a slide.

People always forget about turning, braking and stopping distance in snow conditions. The snow tires really grab and stop much sooner while the car with all-seasons took longer to stop and the ABS was going nuts! Plus, I never see snow packed and stuck to the tires on a snow tire compared to those other tires.

I think it is a small price to pay considering the safety of our loved ones we put in the car. Come on, everyone these days wants a big tank to drive because it is safer, but no one really puts any thought when it comes to the only part that keeps the big suv in contact with the road and plays an important role in safety.

Cheers,
-A

Re: Snow!! Not so good...

I agree. I have had snow tires on my other vehicle for what winter we have had so far and already swear by them. It's amazing ho inch of a difference they make. And these just showed up today for the jeep. Same tires as on my Camry and the Camry is a tank with them. Can't wait to see how good the jeep is with them..

Latitudes are what come stock with 18" wheels. I have the wrangler silent armor on my ram (the same ones that come on the trailhawk) and the little snow I have driven in they were awsome. The best tires by far.

Re: Snow!! Not so good...

I'm not pleased with my Latitudes in snow, ice and mud. They are wonderful for everyday, highway and wet conditions. Since I live in the Midwest and hunt in some "hard to reach" places I need more than an all season street tire. When these Latitudes wear out (and I'm anxiously waiting for that day) I'll be replacing them with on/off road tires.

Don't procrastinate, dump the Latitudes now. You know you want to.

Our big one just barely got above freezing lately, or even enough to melt at slightly below freezing in full sun. So cold, typical de-icer was useless, the packed ice was about as slippery as concrete, etc.

... and now, it will probably be gone below 9-10K feet by Monday or so.

But wait, there's more, rumors of another one coming late next week.

Agreed, 1-2" is hard with DBW, its harder when your RWD like me. Im from Michigan and my last truck was a 1992 GMC Yukon 4X4 w/ Z71. while 4x4 made it easier, I still had to drive by feel. even today I do the same in the jeep, I turn off traction control and feel everything out. IDK im better with it off. However 1-2" does make for some good fun in an empty lot!

I know what you mean. Days when the ground isn't frozen I end up having to drive my '06 Pathfinder on Mich AT2's to the duck blind instead of my brand new Jeep with the Off Road Adventure II package.

I had planned to sell the Pathfinder, but am waiting until after duck season now since the Jeep won't get it done on the stock Latitudes. I guess I'll sell the Pathfinder this spring and throw away the Latitudes in favor of some real tires before next hunting season.

Re: Snow!! Not so good...

We're supposed to get our first substantial snow storm of the season tomorrow, and thus my first time driving the GC in the snow, and now I'm nervous that it won't handle as well as I expected it to. I have to be at work regarless so I need this thing to make it. Guess we'll find out!
