Stripped lug nut

So upon starting my day, about to run some errands, I find my tire flat (rear passenger side). Tire tire takes forever to come off. Upon putting the spare on I see one of the nuts (one with lock on it) is broken. Then when I bring the tire to get fixed I am told the thread is stripped and he didn't wanna put it back on fearing it wouldnt come off in the future.

So my questions are;

1) is it safe to drive with 4 out of 5 lug nuts.

2) how long can I drive like this

3) will I cause more damage if I do

4) screw it and try to get the bolt on

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Stripped lug nut

Where did you get your tire fixed? Most tire shops will have wheel studs and shouldn't charge more than 1/2 hour to pull the caliper and rotor to put a new one in.

Re: Stripped lug nut

You should be fine for awhile with four. No heavy off roading.

If you have four locking lug nuts, you should have the four regular nuts they replaced. Even if you bought the locks with the car, the dealer should have put the take offs somewhere in the car.

Just be sure its the nut and not the stud. It's best to leave it off if either is stripped.

Don't panic, but replace it as soon as you can.

Re: Stripped lug nut

Thank you for the replies.

Got it done at just a regular auto shop. Guy never offered to replace. Told me to take it to a jeep dealer.

Re: Stripped lug nut

It sounds like the problem is the stud. Since the nut was cracked, somebody probably cross threaded it, and then forced it.

Any repair shop should be able to replace the stud. No harm in having the dealer do it. It may cost a little more, but it shouldn't be too expensive.
