Summit wheels ??

Hi all - new member here with a '14 summit. Love the truck so far.

It has the stock 20" summit wheels which I think are "polished"?? I don't think they are a true chrome finish? They are almost a hazy chrome/satin finish??

Either way...does anyone have suggestions as to how to polish these wheels to clean them up a bit?

Can I use metal polish on a mothers power ball?

Any help would be appreciated!

Re: Summit wheels ??

That is correct the Summit wheels are not chrome. They are a high polished finish. Some say there is a clear coat on them, some say there isn't so i'm not really sure what you can and cant do to the wheel. I can say however that what really goes a long way is a nice cleaning and nothing more than a coat of wax. It will really bring out the shine and looks great. I work with a guy who also has a Summit and he isn't into detailing or vehicle in general like I am and just like you said his Summit wheels look dull and more or less silver colored. Mine look chrome compared to his!
Oh and I should mention, the Summit "Platinum" edition comes with silver painted wheels.

Here is a picture of my Summit after a nice wash and coat of wax on the wheels. Do yours look like this?

The 2014 Summit wheels are a polished alloy and do not have any type of coating on them. If you know how you can polish out scuffs and other minor damage. I watched as a wheel shop polished out curb damage on my 2014 summit wheel. They initially used sand paper for the gouged area and then moved to lighter abrasives and a polish. you could not even tell the curb damage had happened when they were done. For what you are talking about a mild polish is probably all you need, I am not knowledgeable on polishing so you may want to check with a shop or someone else on here can tell you specifically what to use. What is good about the standard(non-platinum edition) summit wheels is they are not coated so polish them up maybe a coat of wax and that's it you are done. Many of the other types of non summit GC 20s are coated or painted so deeper damage would not be as simple on them.

Ok. Thanks for the responses guys. That's what I was hoping to hear. If they are not clear coated then a metal polish will work nicely. I detail cars for fun, so I have an assortment of metal and clear coat polishes that I can try. They aren't terrible now...the truck only has 15k miles on it.

Here's a pic from the day we picked it up. I have already removed the hideous running boards. Also pulled the snow tires off and put some Michelin defender ltx tires on it for the summer.

Nice Summit! As you can see from the picture above thats exactly what I had as well. In my picture the front windows were tint matched to the rears and I had all the lower side skirts paint matched white. LOVE it!

I would bet my life on it because I stood there and watched a wheel shop sand and polish gouged areas on my 2014 summit wheel with curb damage. The standard 2014 summit wheels definitely do not have a coating, they are polished alloy only. The platinum summit wheels and the other 20 inch wheels do have paints and coatings on them they are different and require a different and more difficult process to repair and refinish them.

Re: Summit wheels ??

I have a 2014 Summit built in March 2013. The wheels on mine are clear coated.
Easy way to tell. Try some aluminum polish on the wheel. If the cloth stays clean, it's clear coated. And if residue comes off, then it's not clear coated.

Are you sure Bob mine is March 2013 build also lol but i suppose it's certainly possible they put two different types out.

Guy at the wheel shop just called it untreated polished or something like that while I watched him sand out the gouges then work through different types of polishes looked perfect when he was done. Amazing how fast they work through it.

Summit wheels ??

I'm fairly certain they would be coated. no way they would make it through a winter up here without cladding of some sort.

Also I have bought/sold 3 sets of these, some I've looked at had corrosion starting from the wheel cap out where it seemed the coating was blistering.

But hey...have been wrong before!
