Tire Question

My '97 ZJ was equipped with Goodyear Wranglers and I see my new 2012 Laredo X has what I would call summer tires on it. My question is when did Jeep stop putting aggressive tires on the Grand Cherokee? Is it to improve mileage? Lowwer road noise? Any one shed some light on this subject?

That's what I think. I would be very surprised if a 2012 GC came with all terrains.

It appears that Latitudes are installed for their low rolling resistance and therefore supposedly higher mileage, which affects the entire CAFE calcs for ChryCo. They are certainly not the right tire for anyone who plans to use their GC offroad, and Michelin does not call them an offroad tire (although, weirdly Jeep insists that they are). Many threads on this site lament the poor tires offered on this great Jeep, even when you pay extra for an Off-Road package.

Plus in my experience, they do not live up to their claimed mileage (in Canada, Michelin claims treadwear life of 110,000 kms; mine were completely worn out at 55,000 after good rotation and inflation throughout that period). All my other Michelins have met their claimed treadwear life.

And finally, I have found that after changing tires back in April there is no real world difference in mileage anyway. Calculating every tankful by hand, my Goodyear Silent Armors provide the same fuel economy as the old Michelins. There is no significant penalty for using proper tires.

I do not like the look on the Latitudes but they never left me stranded. I had them on the sand at the OBX with 40PSI, in the mud, through a Pittsburgh winter, on wet grass, etc... and never had a problem. I think people just like to complain.

I got 18K miles out of mine before they were gone. Every "factory" tire I had on a new car has been garbage and every tire shop around here says the factory tires are not the same as the ones you buy in the store.

I have the BFG Rugged Terrain's now in the stock size and they do look a lot better and get the same mileage, but they are a little louder.

I have absolutely no issue with Jeep putting the Latitudes on the off-road Jeep. If Jeep put the Silent Armor's on, people would still find something to bitch about.

The Latitudes on my 2011 "trail-rated" Overland were okay in warm weather, but with just a little bit of snow on the road they lost traction. I only see snow if I go up to the mountains to look for it, so this wasn't a serious problem. After 25k miles they're done, mostly because I didn't realize until this week that the dealer wasn't rotating them during oil changes.

Based on recommendations here, I just put on a set of Michelin LTX MS/2s, and this time I'll make sure they're rotated. Michelin says the tread is good for 70k miles. We'll see.

The tire dealer filled the LF and RR tires to 37 psi and the RF and LR to 33 -- I guess two different guys did the work. I'm going to set them to the door recommendation of 33 cold. Does anybody run these tires at a different pressure?

Thanks for the info gentlemen. That's kind of what I expected. I have no real issue with the stock tires, I just looked at them one day and thought I wonder how those will be in the winter. I certainly don't want to buy a whole new set of winter tires for it. BTW, we're in a real snow belt up here.

I set mine to 34 psi according to the evic. I have 3 tire pressure gauges and there is like 10 psi variance between the 3. Cheap chinese garbage. So it's hard to trust any of them.

At 34 psi cold according to the evic, they look a little low and bulged to me. I'm thinking about going up to 37 psi cold. The JGC is pretty porky.

I have a Laredo x hemi with the bright wheels. I forget which tires it came with.
