Angry Tire shop in Chicago ruined my rim and won't pay

Elston's Tire Shop
4100 N. Elston Ave.
Chicago, IL 60618

Tommy Miranda is the owner and he ruined my rim...

So I had a leak in my 2011 Grand Cherokee Overland and I stopped by for a tire fix for $15. So I'm on the side waiting and Tommy was the one that jacked up the car and took the tire off. When he supposedly sealed the leak (which still actually leaked the next day) and put my tire back on, I noticed these symmetrical scratches on every spoke in the rim as you can see in the picture. These were caused by his tire removal machine. He didn't admit to it and told me there's no possibility that his machine would do that. He said it was previously there and I must have drove into something. Which is complete BS. He says he won't pay for a new rim or a used rim.

Besides leaving negative reviews online and taking him to small claims court, what can I do?

Probably nuthin

Re: Tire shop in Chicago ruined my rim and won't pay

Sorry to see this happened. First problem is never go to some random Joe Schmoe sho and especially in Chicago. I never go anywhere but Discount Tire for wheel/tire work.
My sister went to some no name shop in the city. They over torqued the wheel, broke the TPMS sensor and didn't tell her, and over inflated the tires. WTF!!! You guys are a tire shop right? How can you do nothing right?
Hopefully you can get this straightened out. Only advice I can give is hose wheels are available fairly cheap online, and never go to some bogus shop again...please.

driving your rims into a curb will not give you those type of damaging marks but a sloppy tech on a tire machine will. You maybe able to have those resurfaced for maybe around $150 as they look like they are coated but used maybe just as cheap. if they are not coated like the Summit rims a little sand paper and polishing compound will clean them up pretty easy. you can pick up used but make sure it is from reputable place, 20s bend easy and even a small bend will shake. I bought a supposedly straight used rim for my summit only to find out it had a bend in it. Sorry to see that happened but id hold that sloppy shops feet to the fire just like you are don't let them get away with it.

Just be glad this valet didn't take your ride on an unauthorized extended drive and showed it off by over-revving the engine ... happened real close to me. Ouch!

Re: Tire shop in Chicago ruined my rim and won't pay

I had very similar damage caused to an aftermarket rim when getting new tires at Tires Plus. The installer admitted to it and then manager of the shop denied it. The discussion got pretty heated and I had to leave. Ended up going to the regional manager which forced them to pay. Then a different Tires Plus forgot to tighten the lugs on my dads car. It started vibrating on the highway and he took it back. The holes in the rims got messed up and they bought him a whole new set of nicer rims. There is always small claims court. Best of luck.

Tire shop in Chicago ruined my rim and won't pay

This is why I've been going to the same tire shop by me since 1998. I know the owner and most of the guys there. All they do is tires and in my opinion are the best on Long Island.

There is no chance in I'd ever go anywhere else for tire repairs.

I know the shop. I don't go there because of my disdain for such quick lube places. I do have a Just Tires place (Des Plaines) where I go for quick jobs but overall I keep the car universe limited to one specific Subaru dealer; one specific Jeep dealer (for warranty and last resort items); one mechanic for most everything (20 years); and Tire Rack in Indiana.

But if you want, you help me jump start the dead Chicagoland Jeep meets and we go one Saturday and all honk the shop for 1 minute then scamper off.

Re: Tire shop in Chicago ruined my rim and won't pay

You've done what you can do. When I was younger and moved around for work, after finding an apartment, I would get recommendations for a good auto mechanic, dentist and tire shop, in that order.
