Re: tires are whooped... 19k miles!!!

I had the OEM 18" Michelins...
I got 27K miles and two winters of white knuckle & slow driving in the snow.

Biggest f'ing joke of tires besides the crap-tastic Bridgestones that were on my Subaru.

I'm now running Goodyear Wrangler A/T tires for just over 10K and have only worn down 1/32 of an inch. I should get at least 50K out of them.

I'm at 30k miles on my 13 GC and I run dedicated snows from dec to mar and my OEM michelins are not looking good.

Re: tires are whooped... 19k miles!!!

Greetings,

It is vary rare that all 4 OE Tires will wear that quickly. Both Goodyear and Michelin have very good track record of keeping defected batches to a minimum. It is still possible that it could happen.

A better possibility will lie in the suspension and/or the type of road surface that one drives over the majority of the time.

Best for now.

Greetings,

I had one winter of white knuckle & slow driving in the snow with the Michelins Latitudes. And thats all I could take.

Best for now.

Re: tires are whooped... 19k miles!!!

I've got roughly 4/32 left on the Fortera's with 26 k miles and they have been rotated twice...
I'd say 30 k out of them max to still feel safe on them. Not even sure if I should try to make it thru this winter or not really...
Its pretty hard to believe really, that any one gets 50K out of these tires...
I have never had an OE tire last any where near what they should on any car.....

Re: tires are whooped... 19k miles!!!

Stbentoak, no way would I go into winter with 4/32. But that's a lot of wear for 26K miles...I was at 6/32 still at 40K miles when i chose to change mine out and would have left them on a few months longer, but decided to have the new shoes on for the annual family vacation rather than wait until October or November or so.

Re: tires are whooped... 19k miles!!!

Greetings,

I agree with Jim_in_Pa. When you get down to that height you loose the depth to bite into the snow and slush. Moreover, with the GY Forbear, the tire is not soft to begin with, so you are going to loose handling in the ice conditions. Lastly, you are now prone to hydroplaning even faster in wet conditions.

Due be careful.

Best for now.

Re: tires are whooped... 19k miles!!!

Did StaticFX ever say what make of tires he has?
I think the Latitudes are totally unsuited for PA winters, and consider them a pure summer tire. I got a set of new wheels with new Latitudes mounted on them off ebay, and put GY Max Grip Ice on the original wheels, and went back to the winter tire/summer tire routine.

Re: tires are whooped... 19k miles!!!

Maybe people don't run them at the correct pressures. And more importantly, I believe the manufacturer-recommended PSI is too low. I run mine at 42 PSI fronts and 40 PSI rears and I am at a blissful 40-50% tread life.

I have however been researching tires and I have determined that when that will happen (probably in a year's time - assuming normal wear), I will switch to GoodYear Wrangler All-Terrain Adventure with Kevlar in a 255/70 R18 construction. It will be somewhat narrower (by about half an inch) and taller (by a little over an inch) than the OEM offering. I see some advantages on paper:

1) a narrower tire should be the more sensible compromise in most off-road or snow conditions
2) a narrower tire should theoretically return better fuel economy (less friction, wind resistance)
3) a taller tire should theoretically return better fuel economy due to higher effective gearing
4) a narrower tire should mean (within limits) less unsprung weight and so better handling.
5) lastly, compared to the leading tire in Tire Rack surveys, the GoodYear Wranglers weigh considerably less (10 lbs per tire) than the BF Goodrich AT/AKO2 which has all sorts of benefits towards handling and fuel economy and suspension stress.

Well thats my dillemma, I am leaving for a 4K trip to FL and the south in 30 days.. I think I could get 4K more miles out of them without any problems, but then I will be away from home for 2 months and have a loaded car that I wouldn't really want to unload to change a tire due to a problem. I am leaning toward just replacing them for peace of mind...

Greetings,

This is a very important point. My Jeep Service mechanic pointed this out to me a long time ago about the tire pressure. I run my Nokian Rotiva AT's at 38 for the front and 36 for the rear. He said, since the front has more weight than the previous model, you need to compensate. With just over 40k on them, I am hovering around 6/32 which is around half-life now.

Best for now.

Same exact thing with my 14. Replaced the Forteras at 40k.
