Tires diff manufacture

Hi
I had one of my front tires get damaged.
I was going to put 2 new tires up front that are of a different brand than the ones in the back - but still the same size p265/60 R18's.

I called firestone and they told me I have to match all 4 tires because it's 4wd. Doesn't make sense to me - since they're all p265/60 R18's.

Is he right or can I have a different brand up front.

It is dependent on tire wear. If one is full tread and the others are almost gone then the differential is going to be working extra hard and can lead to failure.

It is along the same lines as you shouldn't put a donut on the front wheel for FWD or rear for RWD. You have to pick the lesser of all evils on AWD but just minimize time using a spare.

If I replace BOTH front tires then the differential will be fine - right? It's the transfer case that can bind if the front and rear wheels are rotating at different speeds and only when in 4WD mode. Normal driving the front and rear wheels are not locked.

Seeing as we are in the WK2 section, it is possible it will add wear and tear to the transfer case as it goes 4WD when neccessary.

It won't lock front to rear without being in 4-Lo

Left to right is never locked in front.

It would probably be fine, but I think the advise is reasonable to keep all 4 matched (regardless of 4WD).

Same reason they advise 4 snows even on a FWD car.

You want the same traction/handling on all 4.

Interesting point as new tires should have more tread (different outside diameter) than the old tires. It's not only a 4wd thing, but an ABS sensor reading as well.
