TPMS Sensor Error

When I did the deal om my Jeep I had the dealer install winter tires, rims and sensors. When I picked it up 3 of the sensors didn't read. They told me that after 200 or 300 K of driving they would start working ? I thought well okay fine.

They didn't. So back to the dealer. I get it back and all 4 are reading. But the small TPMS light is still on. I arranged for a service call just for this reason and they tell me it's fixed . Yesterday I thought I'd check the tire pressure. On the rubber it says max 50 psi but on the door sill it says 38. When I took the reading they were set at 40 psi. So I'm thinking that the one on the door is for the summer rubber. So I put each tire to 50 psi. But the light is still on. I'm driving home today so maybe after 200 K they'll start working.

I'm not an expert on this but I would think that they would have to tell the computer to look for a reading of ??? from the sensors and when that pressure is correct the light goes off?

Then last night i was over at my neighbors and made a comment about this and both of them had similar issues with they're jeep. One guy actually gave up trying to get them to fix it.

Is this a "thing" with Jeeps?

Anyway it's back to the dealer again next week and hopefully they figure it out.

Re: TPMS Sensor Error

The TPMS should not read an error at 38 psi which is the recommended tire pressure. The 50 psi reading on the tire is the maximum safe inflation pressure as determined by the tire manufacturer. The TPMS should be triggered at about 28 psi. Perhaps the dealer corrected the sensors but neglected to clear the trouble code/light?

Re: TPMS Sensor Error

Actually the trouble light came on 20 minutes after I left the dealership.

So should I set the tire pressure to 38? I was always under the impression that you always set tires to the recommended pressure as indicated on the tire.

The dealer set them to 40 before I raised it to 50.

Gravity, just a follow-up . . . . How is your TPMS working? Any more issues? What tire pressure did you end up settling on? Also, which dealer have you been seeing & how has their service dept. been so far?

Re: TPMS Sensor Error

I dropped all the pressures back to the 38 PSI . I had it in to a different dealer for a bit of warranty work. The fuel door was sticking out and seperating from the black plastic holder. Kind of weird. Even the new one seems a bit flimsy but...

Anyway while it was there I asked if "they" could take a quick look. The service adviser said they could but if it was something that the other dealer did incorrectly then they'd have to charge me a half hour labour. I figured it was worth the $70 just to get a straight answer.

Tuns out the dealer where i got my tires used aftermarket sensors The service gal said that they offer those but always tell the customer that they're not as reliable and may cause the issue that I was having.

I contacted the service manager where I purchased the winter tires and told him what I had found out. He did some digging and now they're going to install the factory ones at no charge. I'm going to go after another free oil change for my trouble.

Didn't even call and say sorry for bringing you back 3 times for the same thing.

And I really believe that if I didn't have the other dealer look at the issue the first dealer would keep screwing around trying to get the aftermarket ones to work. They wouldn't tell me that they didn't use OEM parts.

What a pain.

Gravity, you aren't having much luck with the Calgary stealers? Which one was jerking you around so I KNOW the one to avoid?

Here is my story . . .
I bought my 2002 Overland new and had it serviced at Tower Chrysler for about 10 years. I fell out of favor with them 2 years ago when they charged my wife $1300 for a power steering pump & hoses repair What a rip-off! I was out of the country so nothing I could do about it and what did she know about car repairs? So I sucked it up, but vowed I would never step foot in that dealership again!
I purchased my 2014 Jeep in Cochrane (best price) but since they are a fair distance from me, I decided to take my business to Courtesy Chrysler. Their top service Advisor (Joe) was a previous head mechanic for 30 years so he knows what he is doing and offers good advice. They are friendly, honest, and seem to care about keeping your business!
I have also heard good things about Big 4 but I have never had any shop work done there. It seems none of the Calgary dealerships get very good Reviews, so it makes it tough to decide WHERE you want to take your Jeep! I hate taking my Overland to ANY Stealers but sometimes you have no choice!

Re: TPMS Sensor Error

Wow.... that's outrageous for a pump and some hoses. The net is filled with car repair stories gone bad.

I tried to get into Courtesy but they gave me a 4 week wait time for an electrical tech.

I bought mine at Renfrew for assorted reasons. Found it on the web and and one thing lead to another.

Up to this issue they've been pretty good.

Canyon Creek Toyota...... Those guys are great.

Re: TPMS Sensor Error

Gravity, thanks for the feedback! It's no surprise the import dealerships seem to get the best reviews! All of the Jeep dealership's here have gone waaaaaay downhill the last few years. It's like, none of them really care anymore? What gives??

Re: TPMS Sensor Error

I think a lot of it has to do with margins and like everyone else they're having a hard time finding good people.

Tell you one thing. If I pick this thing up on Wednesday and the light comes back on... I'm going to loose it.

Well I picked it up today after they did the work and the TPMS light came back on 20 minutes from the dealer.

New appointment for next Tue.

This will be the fourth time that they've attempted to fix this.
