Trailer Tow Group IV package on new 2014 Overland?

Hi all,

I hope I'm posting in the correct thread. I finally had a chance to check out and test drive the new 8-speed transmission 2014 WK2--wow! I'm sold and want to replace my loyal and faithful WJ Grand with a new G.Cherokee in the coming weeks.

Question in reference to the "Trailer Tow Group IV" package.

The dealers near me don't have any units (plenty without trailer hitches) in the configuration I'm interested in:
> 2014 G.Cherokee Overland, Billet Silver or MaxSteel with Vesuvio Indigo Blue interior.
> 6cyl (3.6 liter gas) - the ROI on the CRD just doesn't work out.
> 4x2, never drive off road in the G.Cherokee; that's what my Wrangler is for.
--> $795 Trailer Tow Group IV in case the off chance I need to tow something but really interested because Jeep's website says this package includes/implies upgraded cooling, load-leveling suspension, coils, 220-Amp alternator and more importantly, better brakes.

I'm interested in everyone's opinion, is ordering one with the trailer tow group IV worth it in order to get the enhanced/upgraded components ?

Thanks in advance for your time.

You're talking about an Overland which should come standard with the tow package. I guess it could be different with the 4x2.

Hi Soundonwheels,

I guess you're right. The 4x2 Overland has the option to add the trailer tow package. The concern I have is special ordering one instead of buying a unit already on the dealer's lot greatly diminishes any negotiating on price ?

Thanks

Just the opposite. The dealer has little or no floor plan expense on an ordered vehicle. He has his money in hand as soon as the vehicle comes in ... give a day or two.

Re: Trailer Tow Group IV package on new 2014 Overland?

If that's the way you want it...order it specifically from the factory via your dealer.

But on the 4x2 vs 4x4, there is virtually no economic difference in running either in the real world and the 4x4 provides a lot more than "off road". There are so many situations where these intelligent 4WD systems excel over 2WD. And...the supply of them is going to be much, much larger on the lots. If you change that one thing about your specification, you may be able to find a vehicle already built that matches the rest of your desires without special ordering it.

Hi Jim_in_PA,

Thanks for your 4x4 reply from a few weeks ago; I'll definitely consider expanding my search.

Question... Any idea how much the added weight of the 4x4 versus the 4x2 system will affect 0-60mph performance ? From a cost perspective, I really can't afford the eight cylinder option.

Thanks for your time.

Re: Trailer Tow Group IV package on new 2014 Overland?

There is little difference in performance, AFAIK, between 4x4 and 4x2. And you get better handling on wet roads, etc., with the 4x4 system. While I do have the V8 because I occasionally tow a small horse trailer, my original test drive was in a V6. (MY12 with only the 6-speed tranny) It was pretty darn perky and responsive to me...

One word on the 4x4 versus 4x2 debate:

RESALE.

That.

And the other great point made that the 4x4 will offer a better driving experience overall, not just when you take it off the pavement.

Re: Trailer Tow Group IV package on new 2014 Overland?

I had a similar issue with finding the tow group on my Laredo. Seems the dealers just dont stock many with the tow package in my area (New England) at all. I negotiated my price on one on the lot, then the dealer actually gave me the additional options at or below invoice and ordered me the one i wanted direct from the factory. No negative impact on price at all!! took about 8 weeks all in.

Re: Trailer Tow Group IV package on new 2014 Overland?

Agreed. There is really no negative to ordering. Other than the wait. The dealer may even be able to trade a unit with another dealer.
The 4x4 is more AWD. Not like the old school " pull the lever for the transfer case" thing.

Re: Trailer Tow Group IV package on new 2014 Overland?

Hi everyone !

Here's the latest. The dealers wouldn't budge on pricing for a 4x4 so I ended up ordering (thanks bill_de) a 2014 Overland 4x2, 3.6 Liter with the Tow Package IV.

The vehicle is in transit (thanks Milous) and should be at the dealer by March 15, 2014.

I just received the build sheet and in reference to the Tow Package IV; the Rear Load Leveling Suspension, Full Size Spare, and Heavy Duty Engine Cooling are installed/listed however Jefferson North Assembly installed a 180 Amp Alternator instead of the 220 Amp Alternator.

What are the advantages of the 220 Amp alternator vs. 180 Amp version ?

Additionally, can I just swap out the 180Amp for a 220Amp without it affecting the vehicle's wiring system ?

Thanks in advance for any input.
