Trying to decide: 20" wheels vs 18"

So I picked up my 4x4 Overland, gray, almost two weeks ago, and I'm trying to decide whether I want to keep the stock Overland wheels and paint them a dark gray (I don't think the color they are now matches well) or if I wanna get some new 18" wheels. I would get new tires either way. My major concern with the 20s is not having as much sidewall on the tires, afraid I might scratch up my wheels.
Here are the wheels I have

And here are the ones I'm looking at getting, keeping with a somewhat stock look that I like (would also get spacers)

Thanks for the input!

First - Congrats on your new Jeep! There are a few members on here that have put the 18's you referenced on their Jeeps so you may want to do search for these. I was considering the same 18's and several members said don't do it... If that tells you anything. My choice would be to keep your existing wheels, get new tires and paint. Just my opinion- but you did ask :D

I will trade you the stock 18's on the limited 14 for those...what you think?

I'm actually trying to get Overland with ORA2 just to get 18" wheels. A little bit of extra rubber will not hurt. Take a look at tire rack and see what choices you have with 20" tires vs 18". It is very hard to find a decent tire for 20".

Looks like I'm in minority though ...

I guess I'm also in your minority. I'm probably going to do the same as you. I like the extra rubber. Although the '13 stock Overland 20" wheel is, in my opinion, nicer looking than the stock '14 20" wheel. But I think the '14 18" ORA II wheel is better looking than the 18" wheel pictured in the op. I've never been a big fan of any wheel over 18". I own a Buick Enclave with 18" wheels because when I was test driving the Enclaves with larger wheels they all seemed to ride a little rougher. Of course this is all subjective. CordH, just go with your gut and get the wheels and tires that float your boat best.

The 20's make the Jeep. When I see a grand cherokee going down the road with those 20" 5 spoke wheels it just looks great. If I see one with the smaller wheels it just doesn't look like the high end model to me. There is still a good amount of sidewall on that 20" setup. I mean I guess unless you do some insane offroading then I would maybe be concerned, but if you just drive on streets and are worried about scratching them then I would start to think its time to improve your driving skills :)

While tire choices are limited with 20's, it handles sooo much better on the road. I thought I would want more sidewall too I then came to a realization: a fire road or camp site is probably the most off road my WK2 will see.

Fwiw, you could always buy another set of rims and put winter tires on the old ones. Then after time you can make the desision (sp seems weird, dam phone) on which rims/ tires you like the best, 18s or the 20s. Then sell the others.

IMO, those ten spoke rims look bad, there has to be a better set of rims out there. Don't settle.

Yeah I live in Georgia so there's really not much use for winter tires thankfully. The generally stock look is really growing on me everyday. Ordered a roof rack that came in the mail today, so that'll be one of the bigger mods as far as appearance goes, though its not so much for form as it is for function, but I think it'll look pretty good. Maybe I'll start another thread with some pics whenever I get that on this weekend

I'm waiting to order the 2014 Summit diesel w/the 20" wheels. Does anyone make an agressive tread in a 20" size? I get into some heavy snow pulling a 7K trailer at times in the winter hunting season. I've always run Cooper's most agressive tread on an extra set of wheels for the winter on my Siverado, but it is going in on the Jeep, so that's why the question.

SF.
