Question What tires are you running for the winter?

I'm just curious for anyone that gets that lovely snow, what tire you will be changing to before the snow hits.

I still have the stock Fortera's on my Jeep. I know I probably need to get new tires, either 1. Dedicated winter tire (which I don't want to do) or a more aggressive all terrain tire that will work for the winter months and anything else I may run into up in Alaska.

I'm just curious to hear what everyone else is running. Pics would be nice if you have them!

Re: What tires are you running for the winter?

Stock Michelin Latitude Tours on my Limited are going tomorrow for Michelin LTX M/S 2's as trade in is dependent upon less than 10,000 miles. I decided I did not want to be changing tires each year. While the Latitudes were good enough last winter, I did not want to go to A/T's due to the harsh ride and noise. I spend most of my time on roads, but do wander off on occasion.
This all depends on your location and driving habits. Our friends in Quebec for example must have snow flake or equivalent tires.
My wife has a Volvo XC-70 (POS) and she insists on changing to winter tires!
Let us know what you decide.

When I pull off my 20's Im gonna run Goodyear Wrangler Silent Armor AT 265/65R18s for the California Sierra Nevadas. Ill pull them off probably sometime in late October, early November. Then in March the 20"s go back on.

Re: What tires are you running for the winter?

AAAA I will let you'all know what I do end up going with.

I have done SO much research on tires, I think I burnt myself out I really don't want to go with a dedicated winter tire. I will only be up in Alaska 2 more years, and I don't want to have to worry about selling the winter tires when I leave! Also I don't know where I will be going after Alaska...

I started a thread in the Wheels etc... thread, titled "275/55R/20's still confused" to see what I tires I was looking at if anyone's interested.

I have Blizzaks mounted on 18" alloys for the winter. Winter tires make a big difference in cold weather.

That's the key right there, if you get a dedicated winter set they will perform better than your standard 20" fotera's and last much longer if you only run em in the winter. Below 40 degrees most tires become too hard to really give you much grip.

Re: What tires are you running for the winter?

I can see the 20" Forteras being good if you lived somewhere that gets 5-10 snow days a year and rarely dips below 32° during the day. I had brand new ones from January on in eastern Canada and I gotta say it was terrible. Any amount of decent snow on a regular basis or steady cold climates and you are just asking to get in an accident.

I have the MOPAR black steel wheels and Bridgestone Blizzak DM-V1. They worked well and the WK2 looks like a Black Ops vehicle with the Blackberry Pearl Coat.

For those winter days when the weather is too bad for the black helicopters?

I also run the Blizzak DM-V1 on a set of 18" Sport Edition rims. IMO, they are indeed superior to the Forteras in low temps and icy conditions. Don't get me wrong, the Forteras are decent all seasons and worked fine in the snow I'd seen before I got the Blizzaks, but when the going gets REALLY nasty something designed for the ice, snow, and cold is worth having.

Re: What tires are you running for the winter?

I bought an additional set of 18" wheels and had blizzaks installed. They work incredible in the snow and ice.

You don't want to keep them on the vehicle longer than necessary because they wear quickly in my experience. They come off as soon as the last snow melts off of the road in the Spring.
