WK2 Tires - Compilation of owners experiences

Hi All,

In my search for the best tire for my WK2 I have been compiling a document based on peoples experience on forums. Here is is so far, as I get more I will update the page

LT275/65R18 Nitto Terra Grapplers
Wheels are 18x8 38ET

photo.jpg

JK Wrangler Sahara 18" stock wheels with 255/70/18 Bridgestone Dueler tires.
Tires are 32" dia. (815mm). The wheels are offset 46mm, 7.5" width

275/65R18 BFG with stock 18s

Firestone Destination A/Ts 275/65/R18 with Mopar 18" rims

firestone.jpg

255/75 R17 BFG MT, important to note this is a LOREDO with smaller calipers. I have tried to fit 17" on my Limited and the spacing from the rim to the edge of the caliper is around 1 or 2mm, too little for my liking

Firestone Destination A/T 265/65/18s

Unknown 275/55/20

...more to come

Other information I found:

"If you take the plastic storage bins out from around the stock spare wheel you can fit up to a 32" tire.
I have a 255/70/18 JK Sahara stock wheel/tire in there and everything fits and the cover closes.
I am guessing that a 275/65/18 will also fit. Same tire diameter, just 0.8" wider."

If you have any more add it to this thread or send me a link to it and I will add it to this post..

What tire sizes fit the Overland 20's?

Re: What tires really fit?

While the 32" tires (275/65/18 and 275/55/20) may fit in the spare tire compartment, there has been some uncertainty expressed that the increased width of these tires would allow the compartment lid to close fully. This is obviously a concern to those of us who wish to carry a full-size spare. Can any of you who have these sizes, or have tried to fit one in the spare compartment, enlighten us on this?

Because of that uncertainty, I am presently leaning toward the 265/65/18 size, which at 31.5" is an inch taller than stock, but the same section width. Also, I plan to keep my stock 18" wheels for winter tires, and there are Blizzak tires available in this same size. Presumably, this tire size should fit in the spare compartment without a problem.

I look forward to hearing of other peoples' experiences, and to someone clearing this up for all of us.

Re: What tires really fit?

Good point Ernest.

I have the 255/70/18 in my spare wheel well on a matching JK Sahara wheel. It fits.

I'm now kicking myself for not trying to put the stock 265/60/18 on stock 18" wheel in there to see if it fit while I had it all set up.

Some people say they measured the wheel setup and wheel well and say it won't latch down. My guess is that the 265 width would fit, but I would seriously question the 275 width.

I'd like to be able to do the 5 tire rotation, but I might not now since I would like to put on 275/65/18 after I go through the 255's. But if the 275's don't fit in the well... then I'm SOL.

Someone with stock 265 rubber or (preferably) someone with oversize 275/65/18 take a wheel off and see if it fits in the spare well!

Please

Re: What tires really fit?

I would be curious to see if anyone has switched out the 20 inch tires for something larger?

Re: What tires really fit?

JayB indicated that the 255/70/18 tire fits in the spare compartment and allows the cover to close fully. Since this is also a 32" tall tire, like the 275/65/18, one answer would be to use the wider 275/65/18s on the vehicle and keep a 255/70/18 as a spare, so that the diameters remain the same. This would preclude rotating the spare, however.

We really need someone who is installing the 275/65/18 size to throw one (mounted) in the spare compartment to see if it fits before mounting all the tires on the vehicle, and settle this question for all of us who are interested in this larger size.

Re: What tires really fit?

I just put 275/65/18 Hankook Dynapro MT's on mine. No rub at all. Close in areas but none.
I tried some 2" wheel spacers just to see if some lower offset rims would fit. 2" would be around a 12mm offset, and they do not fit with 275/65/18's unless ya rip of the wheel well trim lol.
I might order some 1" spacers and see if they will work. It would be nice to have a little more choice for rims

Re: What tires really fit?

Do you have to get your car reprogrammed to compensate for the larger diameter?

Eternollie:
Do you have those tires on the stock wheels?

Ernest and I would be interested in having you take one wheel and tire off your rig and see if it fits in the spare wheel well in the back and see if the hatch closes. pics would be great too. Thanks!!
