I would suggest the following options:
  • adjust it in 1 psi to find what is optimal for you either up or down but no more than that. (these SUVs are sensitive to tire pressure)
  • In some cases you might find running 1 psi lower psi in the front the best option if you are getting alot of harshness through the steering.

Great suggestion. Thanks much.

Re: Goodyear Fortera tires, I've had them on three previous Jeep Grand Cherokees (albeit 17" size) and thought they all sucked. Each time I looked forward to wearing them out to make it monetarily worth while to switch to a different tire.

To back up my opinion, check out the TireRack website for tires for 11-12 Jeep Grand Cherokee 20 inch tires and view survey results. Of 16 tire models available in the 20 inch size, the OE Forteras rank 13th!

Re: What's your thoughts on the GY Forteras?

I have the GY Fortera HL's with 36k on them and have no issues. They are fine for me in the rain and were finr for us in the snow. Do I think the Nitto TGer's would be better in the snow? Yes, but the rest of the time the ride would suffer.

Live in Chicago and I found the Forteras to be great in the winter. Like the ride also. Although I am now running at 36 psi---its a little stiffer but smoother ride overall

Re: What's your thoughts on the GY Forteras?

Update: Thanks to all of you who took the time to answer my original post. There are some great posters at this site. 1500 miles on my JGCO now and I'm really not liking these tires. As advised I tried running the 20" Forteras at different pressure to no avail. These tires transmit pretty much any and every imperfection on the road. I've done some research and there quite a few who feel the same. Overall the ride of my new JGCO is "okay" but nothing to brag about.

I think my expectations may be too high though and that's all on me. This is my first Jeep and also my first experience with tires this big so I'm comparing to past Lexus, Mercedes, etc and that's probably unfair. I think if I change out the tires I'll be much happier with my new toy.

Of course maybe I'm just sour because I finally bought a real 4X4 and we only had one inch of snow all winter. DAMN YOU GLOBAL WARMING!!

Again, thanks for the help and advice.

Colin

I had a 2010 BMW M3 Coupe prior to my GC Overland and even though the M3 rode ok with the suspension setting in the comfort mode and 19" tires, my GC (20" GY's) rides likes it on air. But since you are comparing to soft riding vehicles, I guess maybe the 20's do ride a bit firm for you.

Re: What's your thoughts on the GY Forteras?

So far I have 435 miles on them and to tell you the truth this card ride better than my 2009 Lexus Is 250.
It is more quiet, no rolling resistance and I dont fell much of the road unless i push hard.
I like the Tires for sure and if they continue to be like this I might also buy a new set when this run out of meat.

Re: What's your thoughts on the GY Forteras?

I think they are ok on the road, seem to be wearing well at 20k, not much road noise, but I think they're poor offroad or in deep snow. The Jeep's 4wd system is so good it actually hides how bad the tires are off road in my opinion, especially in mud or on wet rocks.

Re: What's your thoughts on the GY Forteras?

Now I've only had my JGC for 6 days, but I've been impressed at how quiet and controlled the forteras are. I've always been a Goodyear fan (you'll never see Chinese made crap tires or cheapo Korean rubber on my rides.)

Re: What's your thoughts on the GY Forteras?

Since I've had both the stock Fortera's and now Michelin M/S2's here's my opinion:

The Michelin M/S2 tires feel stiffer and make more noise than the Fortera's. This could be due to the design and also that I choose the L series rather than the P Metric version of the M/S2's. The L series have a more rugged sidewall and are probably stiffer.

But, I can live with the increased noise of the Michelin's since I agree with other comments that the Fortera's are fine for highways, but are not a reliable off-road tire (you can web search for some of the other issues with the Fortera's, for instance increased wear due to softer material).

Bottom line: If you're going off-road, a more durable tire with better sidewall construction is a must. On a previous vehicle, I learned this lesson the hard way.

Had my car for 632 miles and just popped my first one on a normal city street. They have been fine other than that.
