Re: What's your thoughts on the GY Forteras?

Thought I'd come back with an update. I've had the tires for about 2,000 miles now and they actually seem to be quite a bit less harsh than when I first got them. Is there something about these type of tires where there is an actual break in period or am I just imagining things?

One thing that I did find to be important more so than other smaller tires I have had is to have the right cold tire pressure to begin with. Seems like just a few pounds can make a significant difference in ride quality.

Thanks to all who gave me advice.

Colin

I have had my Overland for a year now and I know just what your talking about. I tried a couple different tires and ended up coming back to the foterias in the end. I think the differences you are seeing in the ride has more to do with the air suspension than the tires. I have played around with tire pressure and yes a couple psi does make a difference in ride on this vehicle. The ride of the air suspension just doesn't seem to be consistant sometimes its soft and sometimes its more harsh. I think changes in ouside air temp seem to play a role in this as well. I have found that putting the suspension up to OR2 and back to normal seems to return it to a softer ride.

What is the correct tire pressure for the overland 20"s with GY's?

Re: What's your thoughts on the GY Forteras?

I've got about 17000 miles on the Forteras now and they seem to be holding up well, not a bad highway tire, with little signs of wear. They do seem to be sensitive to low tire pressure, having a tendency to feel "out of balance". When I run them above 36psi cold they seem to stay smooth as glass. The tire pressure reported by the TPMS system seems to vary significantly between 40 degree days and 80 degree days (~5 psi cold), so it is a tire you may want to monitor and maintain pressure more rigorously.

Cold tire pressure = 36 psi. If you forget it's on a label on the car frame when you open the drivers door.

Re: What's your thoughts on the GY Forteras?

I'm no fan of the 20" GY Forteras that were on my 2011 Overland. I was surprised to find out they only had a "T" speed rating. I always thought they were noisy. I had a vibration and shuddering while driving. I could feel it in the wheel and on my seat. The dealer tried balancing twice and finally said the tires were the problem. I replaced all 4 with Yokohama Parada SpecX. They are much quieter than the Forteras and I noticed that the handling was more responsive and controlled and the vibrations were almost entirely gone.
