Wheel skins on 2005 Laredo wheels

I purchased the Chrome wheel skins on ebay, ..cheap.. 48.00 shipped,
I mainly did this to cover up some curb rash on one wheel. I'd like to keep these on through the winter. What can I do to the regular wheels beneath to keep them from getting ruined by the clips etc. Was thinking plastic packing tape or something else like that to prevent the 'Clean" wheels from getting screwed up. My plan is to pull them all off and super clean them and apply heavy coat of wax.. than snap on the skins.. Has anyone been here before ?
