Who done it mystery... Thoughts?

Okay had my 2014 Overland in last Friday for a new radiator, oil change and rotation. Of course it was salt encrusted everywhere when I took it in, and same when out.

Got Jeep back and washed it Friday night. Inspected entire Jeep as the techs aren't careful sometimes and found a 3 inch scuff in the paint on the front bumper - that I'm pretty sure WILL wax out. But there was damage on one of my 4 two month old rims (previously replaced under warranty for the coating peeling).

Of COURSE when taking it back in on Monday the dealership said "Well, you must have hit something". And I said "I wash my rig weekly and know this wasn't there last week, and I have NOT hit any curbs or anything in the road this week".

And to that they said - If I'd hit something I'd not necessarily have heard/felt it, and that the tire rotation absolutely could NOT have caused the damage. Sh** happens basically.

So they are of COURSE not responsible.

Hubbie looked at the damage and commented it looked like more of a blunt hit, not curb rash, there is a good chunk out of the aluminum itself. I know they had to put it on the lift and the drive guys moved it around a few times which could be where it happened.

I've had aluminum rims for 20 years and never had an issues... Just looking for thoughts on if it looks like curb rash. The scrape kind of does but chunks out of the aluminum make me wonder.

Just for Jeeps has a new rim for ~$430. At this point maybe I'd be better to buy different rims since these seem to be magnet for damage, was planning to get new tires next Summer as the Forterras SUCK in any kind of snow/slush. Could sell my remaining rims for maybe $200 each to put towards a new/different set of rims.

Anyhow -

So - guys/gals, what do you think probably caused the damage to my rims? Debris in the road or curb shot? (Just looking to solve the mystery for my own vindication, of course I'm screwed when it comes to having the dealership take care of it)

Also - is this "fixable" by a rim guy or is the damage too deep do you think?

Thanks for looking - sorry for the long post but I wanted to vent too.

That is very fixable at any reputable rim repair shop.

That doesn't look like road rash to me. Looks like something struck hard near the tire then slip down the rim.

Possibly one of the rims was stood/leaned against something during the rotation & fell over onto it's face striking the spot where the initial gouge was.

The dealership just called and they have a "guy" who fixes rims for them and does a good job. Quote is around $100 to fix. Tire has to come off the rim to fix, so will do it this Summer when getting new tires. Glad to know you think it is repairable too. Been burned by places saying they can get stuff fixed who are biased since they are taking my money. ; )

Thanks for weighing in on what caused it, I suspect your guess is very accurate. Forgot about that could possibly happen. Kind of an ah-ha.

From now on service advisor will walk around my ride PRIOR to touching it to verify no damage. Hubbie said "always take it in clean". Seriously had to laugh at him. Winter - Iowa - 'nuff said. He meant well tho.

Suggesting for "taking it in clean" per hubby.
Buy hubby a bucket and a cleaning sponge... and ask him if he likes warm dinners.

That damage looks almost like a tire mounting tool, it seems to begin way up on the right of the picture and continue around to a nasty gouge at the left end.

That's an easy fix....check out the pic in this web site for some serious road rash and how it was repaired. Yours will be no problem.

Re: Who done it mystery... Thoughts?

Okay, talked with the service manager again - he said there is absolutely NO way they did it during rotation... He said since I've had issue with my rims before being scratch so they checked all of them after they did my rotation. Now remember they were covered with heavy salt residue at the time - and he assured me they would have noticed it. Need to look at the salt encrusted rim when dirty to see how visible it was.

So here's my beef - when initially reporting the damage, he came over and took picture of it to document it. So here's my thought - if he knew for a FACT that damage wasn't on the tire when he left, why did he even bring over the camera? Why didn't he just say they had checked them before it left? I'm kinda famous there for making them replace stuff they scarf up when doing repairs, he knows me by name.

He said something had to have hit the tire on the road. My argument was well if I was going even 25 MPH it would have hit and bounced off or maybe made another impact point, it would not have made a 2-3" scrape along the edge of the rim after the initial impact. That had to be done slowly, a hard hit such as the rim fell over in their shop on it's face and slid as nielboy said.

Soooo mad.

I have had this happen to my last vehicle after hitting a pothole in the road. Was near identical image. Just saying.

Okay, thanks for sharing.... I have had rims for 20 year and never had an issue. But - now seems possible if your damage looks like mine maybe I did do it.

Just the timing of having tires rotated and finding the damage was suspicious since they'd scarfed up my rim before. I'd hit potholes before w/o damage. But it only takes one.

Actually, I'd feel less angry if I did it vs. the dealership. Me being careful and still causing damage is like, "stuff happens", them doing it and not respecting my ride was what had me really mad.

So - here's a woman saying it's very likely she was wrong....

Re: Who done it mystery... Thoughts?

No idea what caused the damage.

But going forward, you should ALWAYS take pictures and/or video of your vehicle inside & out prior to dropping it off at a dealership, service center, or repair shop.

Most cellphones have cameras... Use Them!

I document that all features & functions are properly working before getting my vehicle serviced. I also document how it looks inside & out.

It's the only way to be sure.

Re: Who done it mystery... Thoughts?

Definitely looks like asphalt or concrete damage. Due to the angle, almost definitely happened while driving.

Honestly, I'd pick a free weekend afternoon, take the wheel off the Jeep, and file/sand that down myself. Google the fix, I'm sure it's not hard.
