Who has BFG Rugged Terrains?

Getting 275/55/20 for my 12 Altitude next week. Spending lots of time researching and have it down to 3 or 4 now.
Terra Grapplers G2 approx $825
Cooper AT3 approx $775
Firestone Destination AT $825
Lastly the one I'm hoping some people who have Em chime in,
BFG Rugged Terrains for only $700
All prices are shipped.

Who wants to make up my mind!

Seriously, I appreciate all related experiences with these tires.
Thanks

Re: Who has BFG Rugged Terrains?

Greetings and welcome,

It will help tremendously if you are in a snow & ice area, as well as, if you intend in driving thru such an area.

The Copper AT/3 has an additional model as in the AT/W. The Destination AT I first had 10 years ago. Around 28k give or take 2k, the noise started to get louder. The tire was nice and did moderate well in the snow. It had some nice traction in wet and dry contact. The BFG I had on my JGC when I dumped the LAT's. I had the first production run and I had noise issues around 10K. It very bad in the snow & ice. Otherwise, I felt it had very good handling for traction and a strong tire. I am not familiar with that Nitto tire.

Best for now.

Re: Who has BFG Rugged Terrains?

Thanks for the input. I guess I could mention, I will see some snow a few times a year, some sand and dirt trails a few times a year but the majority of time will be spent traversing the concrete jungles around Charlotte. My choices are pretty much narrowed down to the tires mentioned. Just not sure about the BFG Rugged Terrains.

Re: Who has BFG Rugged Terrains?

Greetings,

In all honesty, would eliminate the BFG from your list. My experience with them was not positive. The Firestone at the time I had them, was pretty good and that was 10 years ago. They have not updated the tire in a while.

I would look at the Nitto or the Cooper AT/3. These tires have had positive feedback. Nitto has stepped their effort in last few years and have improved their product. I had a set of Nitto's a long time ago on my Nissan Maxima and they outperformed the Michelian Energy that I had previously had.

Best for now.

Check out http://www.tirerack.com/tires/surveyresults/index.jsp and choose your tire group. Use the results to see what condition is more important to you (dry/wet/noise/etc). Unfortunately they don't include Cooper tires in their survey. I use the Cooper Discovery AT3 and like them so far.

Thanks. Tire rack doesn't have Nitto either. I have done all the research and review reading I can handle, I was just hoping for some actual feedback from anyone that has/had the BFG's because reviews for that tire are inconsistent.

Sorry, I can't speak for the BFG tires, either. . However, I can rave about the new Nitto Terra Grappler G2's! . They are an excellent AT tire, fantastic in the snow, quiet on the highway, great off-road, well priced, excellent 60k mile warranty, exact OEM size replacement and they look aggressive! They have only been available since Nov 2014 (I believe) so there won't be a lot of reviews available. However, the original Terra Grapplers were around for years & they got very good reviews, overall! It's too bad www.tirerack.com doesn't carry the Nitto brand. I think they would be a good seller! I sure love mine!

Greeting,

Out of curiosity, how is the gas mileage with the Grappler G2's on the open road. In my area, with winter blend gas, a lose a about 1 to 2 MPG. I still love my Nokians.

OP, out of curiosity, I checked out the reviews again for the BFG and yes you have to many inconsistent reviews. Many of them were similar to what occurred with me. At first they were very good and then went down hill from their. As quiet as the JGC is, I still got noise issues after 10k. With an AT tire, the noise slowly picks up after 25k. The other thing as I mentioned in a post above, the performance in snow & ice was bad. I know in the recent years, your region gets hit more often now in the winter. These tire left a bad taste in me. Thus the purchase of the Nokian's.

Best for now.

Re: Who has BFG Rugged Terrains?

I was curious about the Rugged Terrains as well in the same size. They were in my running along with a few of the tires you are considering.

The problems with the reviews on this particular tire is that many people confuse them for the Rugged TRAILS. Those tires were absolute garbage in my experience with them 10+ years ago... The Rugged TERRAINS on the other hand, have only been around since 2011 I believe and are are completely different tire. BFG did themselves a huge disservice here by giving them a similar name. The actual reviews I have seen for the Rugged Terrains seemed decent, but I didn't get the impression that they were a great tire in the snow.

1stJeepGC, I haven't checked my mileage yet!
I'm having too much fun with the hammer down to even bother with the mileage! Hehe! If I did lose a bit of mileage, I woudn't care as I love these tires!

Greetings,

Thanx Hemi2 for the info. I glad the tires are working out for you.

Nitto Tires are a sleeper and they have improved their product line.

Best for now.

Re: Who has BFG Rugged Terrains?

Its looking more likely that I will get the Terra Grapplers this week. I have found the majority of complaints on the Rugged Terrains of the tire gets really noisy after 10-15K miles as 1stJeepGC mentioned.

Cooper AT3s have lots of great reviews but its weakness seems to be the fuel hit of 1-3MPG even though they are a relatively light tire.

As I write this, I have found one more tire to seriously consider.

Mickey Thompson Baja STZ.
So far what I see on reviews are really good, and I found a delivered price around $780 in the 275/55/20 size.
