Winter - Blizzak DMV1 vs Blizzak W965

While researching Blizzak DMV1 snow tires, I see Blizzak also offers the W965.

The price difference is just under $50.00 more for the W965s.

DMV1 R 31lbs

W965 Q 47lbs

Anyone here using the W965s ?

Opinions on which Blizzak would give the best deep snow performance ?

If I wanted to mount on steel wheels, can the TMPS be disabled ?

I think the W965s are an older design. They are more of a heavy duty truck tire than a SUV tire. They are for heavier loads, have more plies, and more durable. Because they are HD, they are heavier and ride stiffer. Commercial trucks that tow heavy often use them. Last I checked they did not have an OEM size for the WK2, only coming in 16 and 17 inch versions. Perhaps the 17s are suitable for base V6 Laredos.

I currently am using the W965 on my GMC Savana 2500. They are a 10 ply tire and have found their performance to be quite good. We have only had about 5" of snow right now but they seem to pull pretty good. I have been to several mines and they tires have taken a beating.
I am not sure I would put them on a passanger vehicle though. I think they would be a little overkill and cause a rough ride.
I would choose either the DMV1 or WS70.

I have the DMV1s on the stock 18 inch wheels that came with my Overland's Off-Road Package. They stick well on ice, and in snow and slush, but get mushy on dry pavement when the air temperature is in the 50s or warmer. The only real problem I have with them is the humming noise from the tread, but the Winter performance is worth it.

Dm-V1's...had them on wrangler, and now wk2...the 965's are LT rated, and to achieve the LT rating, I dont believe the tread is the softer multi cell compound tread, and has more silica content and the multi tube compound. My only complaint with any blizzak is thick slush or some heavier wet snow seems to pack them up and a more open tread would help, but overall they handle 99 percent of winter great...and the wife won't be without them...my family has always run blizzaks or studded snows she didn't ever know they existed until we got together. When we get another wrangler, I may try studded duratracs on it...open tread, good siping and studs.

I just came across your post and am also surprised there aren't more replies.

The W965, as referenced above, is an excellent severe duty snow tire for HD2500's, etc. I had them on a 2005 Dodge 3500 Cummins Turbo Diesel in Montana and they were excellent. You only need them if you need a ten-ply 3/4 or one ton truck tire. The LT tire adds more un-sprung weight to your vehicle then it was engineered for. The tire pressure would have to adjusted due to the stiffness and extra load rating of the LT tire and the ride would be harsher than stock.

I have also had three sets of Blizzak DM-V1's and their predecessor the DV-23 on a Chevy Suburban 1500, Z71 Avalanche 1500 and our 2013 Grand Cherokee. We lived in a canyon that received 400 inches of snow a year. They are excellent and never disappointed in any harsh Rocky Mountain snow driving. Their tread does where fast once it gets over 40-50 degrees, so take them off before it gets warm. The first 55% of the tread, gives you the compound better designed for ice, the remainder will wear like any other M+S tire. We have found that there is no need for chains with the new tread compound during the first half of the tread.
