I have found that the large tire stores will price match TireRack's cost if you ask. My local Firestone dealer (owned by Bridgestone so will have the Blizzaks) did this and didn't add in the shipping cost that NTB always wanted. That way, you can do the lifetime balancing thing instead of paying that for the life of the tires.

Re: Winter Tires & Rims?

From checking, it seems there are only two winter tires available in size 265/60-18.....Bridgestone Blizzak DM V1 and Pirelli Scorpion Ice and Snow.
There might be more choices in 17" size but I haven't checked as yet.
Note:
265/50-20
265/60-18
265/65-17, 245/70-17
All have equal diameter (~30.5") and therefore will not affect speed readings.

Re: Winter Tires & Rims?

It seems the widest choice of winter tires comes in size 245/70-17 .

I have 18" snows replacing the 20" wheels on my Charger, and will do the same on my GC.

The difference for me is peace of mind. The 18" tires have more sidewall between the wheel & the road. That means less chance of damaging the rims by winter road hazards. Plus, taking the 20" off during the winter will save them from salt damage & corrosion.

Re: Winter Tires & Rims?

Summer and A/S tire compounds loose grip and become hard below 5 celcius. That's where winter compounds are designed to work. So, snow is not the only problem, just the extreme cold alone affects tire grip. There is also an advantage of using a narrower tire for snow.

Re: Winter Tires & Rims?

Funny but I actually like the look of the stock 17" wheels over the stock 18" and they'd work better for winter in my pothole riddled area anyway.

I think 17" is better for winter tires because of the greater selection in that size (last time I checked).

Re: Winter Tires & Rims?

Are there any black 17" OEM wheels available?

Re: Winter Tires & Rims?

Tire Rack says there is no 17 inch option for our trucks. Do 17s clear the brakes? I have always used studs so if i go with the Blizz it will be a first.

Re: Winter Tires & Rims?

Only on the base V6, won't clear the heavy duty or V8's brakes.

I found 17 in wheels at the rack that may fit :

Re: Winter Tires & Rims?

Blizzaks can be had in a 20".

Many AT's also have solid snow ratings with 18" options.

Re: Winter Tires & Rims?

So do we need the tire pressure sensors on winter rims? I know on some cars the light in the dash stays lit if no sensors are on the rims... no big deal if you check your tire pressure with a gauge from time-to-time.
