Winter tires and rims for Overland in Canada

Folks, any Canucks on here recently picked up some winter wheels and tires in Canada? What did you go with? Thinking the xice2 or blizzaks through Costco but open to other options.

Thanks

Re: Winter tires and rims for Overland in Canada

I picked up a set of Toyo observe GSi-5's last year and mounted them on the stock 18's for my winter setup.

Haven't had experience with the two choices you've mentioned, but online reviews of them are quite favourable.

I sold the crappy Fortera's immediately and installed the Terra Grappler G2. I just wanted 1 set of tires/rims so these fit the bill, perfectly! They are an awesome AT tire, they look aggressive, are great in the snow, mud & rain, and are fairly quiet on the highway I kept the stock 20" rims & after 8 months, I love these tires! I got mine from these guys:

To answer the original post I have Blizzaks and have run them in multiple cars in the past 7 years. No all season tire will compare to the traction you will get with a dedicated winter tire.

Re: Winter tires and rims for Overland in Canada

If you're in the GTA, check out Simply Tire. They have pricing for various winter tire options with 18" steel wheels.
SimplyTire Inc. - Products - Winter Packages

If you want anything fancier than steelies, email the owner, Allen, & he'll give you pricing on some different options.

I bought new summer tires/wheels & got Blizzak DMV1's for my factory 20's.

Re: Winter tires and rims for Overland in Canada

I've used the Blizzak DM-V1 and they were great, if a little on the softer side. I replaced them this last winter with the Yokohama iceGUARD iG51v and those are also fantastic.

I've got them mounted on 18" Sport Edition rims and they swap on and off easily... they're even equipped with TPMS sensors so everything plays nice with that system too. I will say, though, that with the size of the wheels on these things we are talking some decent weight you'll be slinging around.

Thanks for the responses. Guess I need to think about tpms too. Like the idea of going with a lighter rim than a steelie if possible.

Re: Winter tires and rims for Overland in Canada

I went one crazier and picked up a set of BFG T/A KO2 tires and mounted them on the stock 18" rims. You can get them in the 20" size for your Overland.

These tires are M+S with the mountain snow flake rated for winter and approved by the insurance companies. The ride is a little more noisy but the handling is better than the stock tires and there is no noticeable increase in gas mileage.

If you run snows very long, get a set of dedicated wheels with new TPMS.
If you need to drive on heavy ice and snow, nothing beats the Nokian Hakka series and they aren't that much more than other premium winter tires. The only time you'll need to slow down is for that Subaru in front of you.

Hey! Some of us drank the Subaru Kool-Aid years before we drank the Jeep Kool-Aid.
