Re: WK front ELSD on WK2?

I read that the 2010 and 2011 uses a similar if not the same diff in the housing, but the ELSD has larger bearings than the open diff so the housing races need to also be bigger. So the diffs are not interchangeable without at least some machining effort. There appears to be housings with larger races in some 2011 parts books, but I don't think they were actually put into production.

See if you can find a discussion up about swapping out the front diff on a WK or Commander (IFS). Must have been some discussion along the way since they've been in Jeeps since 2006 or so.

Re: WK front ELSD on WK2?

Ok , I sent this message to Randys's sales Manager Arron Spitzer and will do some searching here in a bit . ( wife's off ,so Christmas calls ,lol). and post what I find

Hi Mr Spitzer , we have a on going discussion going on on a forum called Jeep garage .org and I am hoping you can spread some light on the subject .

we are trying to figure out weather you can swap out a ELSD from a Jeep WK ( 2005 -2010 ) to a Wk2 ( 2011-2012 ) . I did a search on your site and it is showing the same axle is in the WK from 2005 and up , but we have heard that some of the carriers require a larger bearing and there for makes them not compatible

Here is the link to the Thread i am talking about WK front ELSD on WK2?

Any information you can give us would be greatly appreciated

Thanks

Re: WK front ELSD on WK2?

OK... I have been searching the better part of the morning ( including getting side tracked to read Other jeep articles) and I cant find anywhere where there has been a issue with a different size bearing .

I am still waiting to hear back from Randy's

FWIW, I'm interested in *any* front locker solution for the WK2. I posted about the WK since that seemed like a possible approach, but it wasn't my intent to limit any ideas.

Thanks Spyder for all your research.

Re: WK front ELSD on WK2?

Np , sometimes you just have to wade through alot of info before you find what you need ,lol.

I would recommend the auburn ECT'd lockers to anyone due to the option of the Limited slip In the front .
The Wk locker is a good option plus , I am unsure if they make the ECT'd for the WK2 yet .

Re: WK front ELSD on WK2?

I've also read in the commander forum that the ELSD is wider and won't fit in an open pumpkin... someone over there was building his own controller for the transfer case... but you know you can't believe everything you read on the internet. I recall reading about the bearing size on one of the STR8 sites.... just before the poster realized that, with the power he was making, the front end is off the ground anyway

I always try to follow the part number listings , 99% of the time they seem correct. There is always that 1% though. For example, my Yj had a Dana 30 , so did my LJ, both took the same parts, same carrier, etc. So when we installed the locker from the Yj into the LJ , we found a small clearance issue with the carrier. This was due to the carrier for the locker being larger then the open carrier was.
Nothing great and nothing a few passes with a grinder didn't fix . It was a casting flaw but easily corrected.

I wonder if he ever got the controller to work? I would be nervous about bricking the whole system , lol.

Re: WK front ELSD on WK2?

The WK and Commander front does indeed have a C200F (open) or C200FE (ELSD) with 200mm ring gears. The WK2 has 195mm ring gears and an aluminum housing. Does that make it a C195F?

I don't see any sign of anyone making lockers for it. No one seems to be making metric gear sets either.

Last I heard, as a few month ago, the controller worked except that 4low caused a check engine and the transmission went into limp mode. Seems that he may need to somehow trick the CAN bus data.

Re: WK front ELSD on WK2?

Sent this message to Justforjeeps . Lets see what they say

HI , we have been going back and forth as to if this is possible and we are hoping you can help us .

We are discussing weather someone can install a later year ( say 2010)Grand Cherokee into a 2011-2012 Grand Cherokee and work it Manually with a switch .

I have been trying to research this for about 2 days now and I managed to find Off of Randy's ring and pinion , that the same CF200 and 200E were used in all Grand Cherokees and Commanders from 2005 and up . Here is where it gets tricky

According to the MOPAR sites the 2005 takes a 200 mm Ring gear where the 2011-12 take a 195 mm ring gear .

So its seems we are back at square one ,lol . There have been some discussion as to weather some have larger bearing races ,etc.

I am hoping that you maybe able to settle this for us . Any Help you can give will be greatly appreciate

here is the Thread where the discussion is going on
WK front ELSD on WK2?

Thank you again

Re: WK front ELSD on WK2?

Yeah, the gears are not broken out for the axles as they have been in the past, perhaps wanting you to buy the entire assembly if you have broken gears ($700-$1000).

From the parts list is looks like there are four variations, including two electronically controlled front diffs, but that's misleading as the only difference between them seems to be gear ratios and whether it goes in a electronically controlled vehicle. From the details on some parts sites, all have conventional diffs regardless. These are used in Durangos too.

Re: WK front ELSD on WK2?

This would make sense . The 4 different would be
Open .3.07 - 3.56 ( guessing )
open 3.56 - up ( 4:10,4:56,4:88)

Elsd 3:07 - 3:56
Elsd 3:56-up ( 4:10,4:56,4:88)

being that the limited have a 3:73 gear ratio and I am sure ( just like with other jeep products) , the V6 might have a 4:10 ratio . These are all just sort of Guesses as to what they maybe ( I have not looked ). I will have to work on what all the Gearing options are .....

I do know my 5.7 has a 3:73 ratio
