Yes, these new ones have good sound deadening but that only helps when the windows are not open.

Re: Worth switching to winter tires?

4wd helps get you going(into trouble?), but it doesn't help you stop, steer, and get out of the way of people like my brother in law who says, "i got 4wd, i'm good in my F150", but won't drive in snow with it cuz he's all over the road(running GY Silent Armors, no weight in bed). We run blizzaks, or studs on 4wd trucks, wranglers, durangos, and grands...no questions. The wife first realized how much of a difference on her old front wheel drive, now she won't be with out the blizzaks. If I lived where there was more "deep" snow, I would go with studded Duratracs, where we are in OH, we get wet ice, some deep snow, light snow that is just enough to make everything slippery, and all the "4wd SUV's" going 15mph scared of winter(amazing, comes every year they seem to forget that)get passed by us in our blizzak wearing Jeeps, and we can stop at the light, and make our turns. Just saying, how many people do you see going slow in their car when the weather is bad. They probably spend more on golf, vacation, whatever, but won't spend a few bucks on some extra safety/security for their family for the winter. I don't get it.

Re: Worth switching to winter tires?

Your ability to get traction also depends on the type of snow and what is underneath the fluffy stuff. I myself have the Latitudes and plan on keeping them on as we usually get mild winters and think my JGC will do fine in those conditions.

Re: Worth switching to winter tires?

I have been using winter tires on all my vehicles for decades. I was running late installing winter tires on my new Limited and had the opportunity to drive it in snow, with and without winter tires.

Last Friday, we encountered our first snowfall of the season here in the Toronto area. The roads were very slick, the result of approximately 2 inches of snow, temperatures just under freezing and no salt trucks. Driving my Limited with stock 265/60R18 inch Latitude Tour all-seasons with approximately 4,000 miles, I noticed fairly decent traction during acceleration, but poor turning ability and massively long stopping distances. Thirty minutes later, with new winters Latitude X-Ice Xi2 245/70R17 installed, I returned home in a vehicle that was transformed. I was amazed how much shorter the stopping distances are with winters. Dramatic is the word that comes to mind.

You can never have too much traction, have brakes too powerful, be too alert, have too much skill, etc.

Re: Worth switching to winter tires?

I too have been running the OE Latitudes, only 5k miles on them and after the recent snows in the CO Rockies I am getting Hankook ipikes installed tomorrow morning. Latitudes were just plain scary. Been driving in either the VT or CO mtns most of my life and have never felt that unsafe!

Re: Worth switching to winter tires?

In short, yes, switching to snows is cheaper than an accident.
