Re: 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland- Granite

Update: The engine swap is completed and my Jeep is ready to be picked up! I will either pick it up tomorrow or Saturday. I can't wait to get it back, partially because I am tired of my rental. It isn't as nice, is older, has less power, shifts horribly, and worst of all has been smoked in by a previous renter (the power and the shifting aren't ideal, but I absolutely despise the smell of smoke). Normally I don't drive the Jeep much during the week anyways as my son drives it to school (with his two younger brothers) most days now, but he can't drive the rental (have to be 25 or something) so he is driving my car (Infiniti M, within 2 years will be an Audi S6, Cadillac CTS Vsport, or maybe even a CTS-V when the new one comes out). I would take my wife's Lexus GX (soon to be a RRS or JGC SRT) but she won't take the rental Jeep because of the shifting and the smoke, so I am stuck with it until we get MY Jeep back. I actually love this Jeep, much more than any car I have had in a while, and it has really reinvigorated my passion for cars/SUVs/Jeeps. If I do end up buying the land I am looking at, I could see a Wrangler (probably Willys edition) added to the family as well.

Re: 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland- Granite

I picked up the Jeep yesterday and all is good.

Also, I finally got a chance to drive the Jeep in the snow today (used Snow mode), and it is a BEAST! The roads were pretty bad, and at no point did I feel like I was not in complete control. I think I am going to order winter wheels and tires just because they will work better in the snow and I will be more comfortable with my son driving it, especially when he has his two little brothers in the Jeep with him. I think I am going to get 18" rims (Part Number: 82212286), but I am undecided on the tires. Could I go with something like a GY Silent Armor and still have better snow traction than stock, or do I need to go with a dedicated snow tire? Also, would I have to get my tires balanced every time I switched between the 18" wheels and the stock 20" inch wheels?

Re: 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland- Granite

Thanks! 2 weeks later and everything is still all good. I am ordering all of the skid plates and Mopar 18" wheels with a snow rated AT tire. Hopefully I'll have all of that here somewhere around Christmas. I'll let you guys know what I end up ordering soon.

Merry Christmas everyone!

I just ordered the skid plates and am holding off on the wheels/tires for now. I am going skiing from 12/29-1/5, and will hopefully install them on 1/6.

Also, my Jeep found a friend yesterday. It was a 2013 Wrangler Rubicon Unlimited 10th Anniversary Edition. I almost bought one (2 door), and seeing one did not help me ease my regret for not buying one Sorry for the terrible picture.

Re: 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland- Granite

Your Overland looks good in Gray! As for wheels, what's the offset of your current wheel? The new '14 Rubi wheel looks good but won't fit, they're a 17" rim and hit the front face of the caliper. The '14 Sahara rims are 18"x7.5" but their offset is only 44.5mm also.

Look for a used (take-off) GC set of the 18x8x56.4 rims. I just picked up an extra set of four with center caps (no tpms sensors) for $225.00 for my '13 GC Trailhawk. It would be best to test fit the wheel just to make sure you don't have caliper clearance issues.

The casting numbers on the inside of the 18x8 rim is:
1Hx65TRMAB - POL
1RV66TRMAA - PNT
18x8x56.4

No, you won't have to "re-balance" the tires when you swap back and forth. That is unless you throw a weight and/or you're seeing uneven tire wear. Then you'll need to have the alignment checked too. Might also look for a tire that you can do a four tire rotation versus one that can only move front to back (on the same side). You'll get more total mileage from your tires.

Keep us posted...

Re: 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland- Granite

Thanks!

To be honest, I have no idea what the offset is, other than that it is the stock offset.

I put away the new tires and wheels thing for a few months at least, as the GY Forteras are good enough and I rarely get snow here. I will keep you posted if things change (which they probably will ) on the wheels. I am thinking about maybe just running 265/50R20 Nitto Terra Grapplers on the stock rims, as those are really what I like best. However, if I end up buying land, I will probably buy some 18" rims for off-roading, so thanks for the part numbers. Also, thanks for the info on swapping tires, I am new to this and had no clue/

Re: 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland- Granite

Update on the new engine:

I have noticed 2 things that worry me a little, but hopefully you guys can give me some answers:

-Fuel economy is worse than before, even after the break-in period, by about 2 MPG for combined driving. Do you think this is an indication that something is wrong, or do you think that it could just be the winter gas?

-The other day I started the Jeep after it had been sitting for 8 hours and it started and ran rough. I gave it some gas and it didn't feel or sound right. It felt and sounded similarly to how it did when the first engine died, although not as bad, which is why I was worried. It went away after a few minutes of driving. It wasn't overly cold, just about 32 degrees fahrenheit. I have been remote starting most of the time because it has been so cold here, so I haven't had a ton of experience starting it in the cold. I started it normally today and didn't notice anything (although I wasn't really paying attention), although today was about 60 degrees. This is probably just a normal cold start, but I am on edge because of the engine failure.

Any input will be appreciated, thanks.
