Re: 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland- Granite

2000 mile update- I found about 2 inches of standing water in my battery compartment the other day, and spent about 20 minutes tonight soaking it up with paper towels. I will bring it in to the dealer, who says it is a fairly common problem and easy fix, so I am not overly concerned. Otherwise, all is good!

I have been so satisfied with the Overland that I am probably going to purchase an SRT in the next 2-3 months. I would purchase sooner, but I cannot decide what color to get. I am between Granite (again, I know), Deep Cherry Red, and Redline, but could be pushed towards Maximum Steel or Billet. Redline is an extremely flashy color and not really fitting of my conservative nature. However, I am buying an SRT, so it isn't going to be very conservative no matter what color I get. Deep Cherry Red is good in some lighting conditions, but a little dark in others. I like Granite a lot, but I feel somewhat compelled to change it up because I already have an Overland in Granite. I am also pretty sure that I want the Black Chrome wheels, but like the Satin Carbon on certain colors. Other than that, I am getting the Sepia interior, HK stereo, and Panoramic Sunroof. Feel free to weigh in your opinions on colors.

The Jeep is almost flawless, except for these very small issues:

-There is a VERY occasional rough shift when coming to a stop.
-Eco Mode- I know, this isn't really an issue, but it is terrible and I wish that it wouldn't default on.

Now, for the real review:

Exterior- 9/10
The exterior looks are really subjective, but I am liking the design more and more.

Interior- 9/10
The interior of this Jeep is FANTASTIC. As a reference point, I would rate it higher than the interior of my 2011 Lexus GX. The quality is fantastic, there is leather EVERYWHERE, the real wood looks awesome, and the color scheme is great. In my experience, the interior of the Jeep is only substantially eclipsed by the interior of the 2014 Range Rover Sport ($80,000-$90,000) and the Tesla Model S ($80,000-$100,000).

Ride Quality- 9/10
The Quadra-Lift air suspension makes the Jeep ride incredibly smoothly. I can go over speed bumps at 20+ MPH without being jolted. There is a considerable amount of body roll, but given that this is a 2.5 ton luxury SUV meant for off-roading, there isn't any more than expected.

Cabin Quietness- 8/10
The cabin very quiet until you get above 60 MPH, and even then, it is not by any means loud. However, I think that my Lexus is still quieter, but I also paid $15,000 more for it, so once again, not a completely legitimate complaint.

Sound System- 7/10
The 9-speaker Alpine system is good, not great. Now, I am used to premium sound systems (Bose, Mark Levingston, HK, etc.), but I still think that the Alpine system should be better for a $52K vehicle. The HK system is definitely something I wish I could have gotten in the Overland.

Power- 8/10
The 5.7L HEMI V8 provides more than enough power. Personally, I wish I had more, but more is definitely NOT a necessity (more on this later).

Additional Thoughts-
It has been an absolute joy owning the Jeep for the past few months. I am completely satisfied with my purchase, and have had a flawless experience thus far. My 16 year-old son has been driving his two younger siblings in the Jeep to school on some days (when I am not using it), and I have no fear of it breaking down and stranding them.

I have enjoyed this Jeep so much that I am considering buying another (SRT this time) to use as my primary car (currently I drive an Infiniti M56x) or my wife's primary car (Lexus GX). I am also considering the Tesla Model S Performance and the 2014 Range Rover Sport Supercharged. I will most likely buy 2 of the above within the next year or two (possibly sooner) and my wife and I will share them. The Tesla is a completely different type of car, so I won't even get into it. However, the Range Rover Sport and the JGC SRT can definitely be cross-shopped. Here's a short list of what I have found so far:

Range Rover Sport Pros:
-Retain off-road ability that is lost with the SRT
-All-around nicer- more features, insanely nice interior
-Styling is different from Jeep (the SRT does not look that much different than the Overland I already have, so it would be sort of like having two of the same thing with the SRT)
-Better service

JGC SRT Pros:
-MUCH cheaper and a much better value
-Similar to Jeep I already have- I know I will like it
-Sportier feel (not sure if I want it, though)
-Doesn't give you that elitist feel that the RRS does

What do you guys think?
I am a big fan of the Range Rover Sport SC, and cross shopped it against the GC.

The price difference was just too great, since I stayed at the Overland instead of what would be insanely impractical although gleefully fun, the SRT.

The uptick on the interior of the '14s and the ZF 8speeds just put it way too close to Range Rover territory to go with the additional 40K [being of sound mind, we blew 25% of that on a nice cross country vacation] of the RR.

However, your choice is more difficult, since the SRT has very limited rough terrain capability. The capability isn't zero, but you'd have to fit it with skid plates at a minimum, and it still wouldn't have the height range of the OR-II models or the Range Rover. You may not care.

Gas mileage? Well, neither is a Prius or Tesla... I believe the new RRSportSC is a tad faster than the GC, and hemi is nice, but thats a tuned up Jag engine under the hood.

Visibility on the RR is less than it used to be [or seems that way] but thats one area the GC fails badly on.

One hates to argue with such an esteemed colleague, but I think you are pulling this from your posterior.

The older RR Sport was a shortened LR, and with good replacement tires could go anywhere the LR could.

The new one is based on the Range Rover to "gain a bit of lightness" for performance but even harsh critics admit to its genuine offroad capability. The Cayenne has been emasculated, but the RR Sport has all of the goodies of the GC for offroad, and if thats not enough is just as modifyable since the hard parts are there.

Like the GC, the stock tires suck, but thats fixable.

Re: 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland- Granite

I'm bringing it in to the dealer tomorrow for the water issue, and hopefully will get the Rock Rails and illuminated door sills installed as well. If they have skid plates at the dealership, I'm getting those installed too. Hopefully I get everything installed and will have pictures up for you tomorrow night, but if not, I'll update you on the water issue.

The dealership also has a Granite SRT and a Deep Cherry Red SRT, so I will be taking a look at those!

Re: 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland- Granite

Update:

I got the leak fixed (or so they say) and the recalls done (instrument panel and brake light), but did not get anything installed. They want $600 for the rock rail install and want $900 for the skid plates and the install! I did not get a quote for the illuminated door sills, but I'm sure it's around $100-$150. I am going to do the skid plate install myself, but I don't think I am capable of doing the install for the other two. Does $600 sound fair to you guys?

Re: 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland- Granite

From what I understand the rock rail install is difficult and takes something like 8 man hours, so $600 is probably a fair price.

I've been looking into the rails too and have heard of quotes in the 3-350 range. Perhaps shop around a bit more before committing?

Check out Lankness's thread on his Maximum Steel SRT with Black Vapor Chrome Wheels..... I drool every time I look at his SRT!
