Offroad Videos - wk2project / Alludc's Altitude

Thought Id separate the thread a bit, and leave this one specific to my offroad adventures.

Part of the reason I chose an Altitude with qt1 was because I already had a fully optioned, Hemi, QD2 2012 wk2 and I knew what it was capable of. I also know that I rarely needed to use any of its ' goodies '. So...I wanted to see if I could make a capable rig, from Jeeps more basic platform. With the right parts, I wanted to show its abilities. So far, it hasnt disappointed at all.

Its currently lifted 3" (2.5" rro + 1/2" setting on Bilstein 5100s). Add my 33s to the mix, and im 4.25" over stock. Over the next few mos it will become even more capable, and I may be more adventerous...but its still my baby. I love it, and plan to keep it shiny side up.

This first vid is fairly challenging in parts. Its Broken Arrow Trail in Sedona, Arizona. Up in beautiful red rock country. This 1st vid is just one part of it, and its called " Devils Staircase ". Rightfully so. Its wicked. Its steep, its slick, its narrow, and people end up on their lid here from time to time. Its technically a one-way so you wont see me goin up it, although some do. Goin down it is sketchy enough. lots of people end up bangin up underneath their (insert vehicle choice here), but I got through with no issue. just took it slow and steady. Ill add more vids shortly, but for now

Here its is, Broken Arrow - Devils Staircase....

Vid #2....
This is the full video of Broken Arrow trail. Some parts are sped up to try to keep the overall time down. Enjoy.

Re: Alludc's - Wk2project My Offroad Videos

This video is kinda long, sorry. But has a few different views. Gopro on my rig, and also for awhile, on the Wrangler in front of me looking back.

This is called the "back way" to Crown King. Its a stretch of offroad from Lake Pleasant, all the way to Crown King AZ. I went with a group of about 12 Wranglers and one Xj. Others joined us later. This road is fill with a few obstacles along the way, all with bypasses. I wasnt really comfortable here as the obstacles require alot of articulation, or skill. Being that my rock sliders are not here yet...I skipped most obstacles but still had a great day.

Nothin special here, just a new entrance to Tonto Natl forest I found yesterday. Only limited time, but will be back to explore the massive amounts of trails back here in a week or two.

Thank you. Fantastic scenery and makes me happy to confirm my vacation destination of Sedona, AZ, 3 weeks from now.

Brave man to do this with only QT 1. Not to single you out, but I wish someone could explain my the psyche of people who purchase a base vehicle and then attempt to do with it things that are meant only for the upper, better equipped trims.

, for the same money you could have just gotten into a Limited with ORA II and the Low Range QT II. Tires are a toss-out, one needs to upgrade them regardless of the trim, but in terms of factory capability, I think you would have been better off with a factory adjustable suspension and a low range gearbox option. And handling benefits from the Bilsteins were lost with the lift kit.

It is no different then folks buying a WRX and then upgrading the transmission and the turbo with STI bits by the time they reach 3,000 miles (as opposed to doing it "organically" when OEM parts break or wear out, as to amortize the costs and maximize the benefits of a lower initial cost.

I am happy you asked honestly. While it may not make sense to you, I did this on purpose. First of all, a solid 98% of Grand Cherokee owners do not go offroad like I do. qt1, or qdII alike. I had a Hemi, QDII 2012 wk2. Loved it. did great with whatever I threw at it. I purposely chose to go the Qt1 Altitude route for multiple reasons. #1, I prefer the look. The exterior with painted trim pieces, grill inserts, dual exit exhaust...and thats before you even get inside to the leather/suede seating and better colored interior trim. All personal opinions, but these were all important to me. #2, I wanted to see (and to show) how capable a QT1 could be. I think im demonstrating that. As far as factory adjustable ride height air...have you driven one of those offroad at orII height? It'll shake your fillings out. Its horrid. Mine rides better than OEM right now, while at my 3" lift.

I like to be different. Its not about costs, or making sense. If I wanted to make sense and really fulfill my desire to be offroad I woulda got a Wrangler right? How boring is that?!

You driving to Sedona? Bringing your Jeep? If not, gonna rent a JK from Barlows? Either way....hit me up and Ill come wheelin with ya, show you what I mean.

Re: Alludc's - Wk2project My Offroad Videos

Thanks for not taking it personal. I don't mean it that way, ultimately I am one of those who made a Subaru Legacy GT into a hybrid of OEM parts from the STI and the EVO cars. But I did it as OEM parts failed, over 11 years.

I will be in Sedona over Valentines day and I was going to rent a Jeep or 2 quads or a side by side ATV. I am flying in.

Yes I have driven my Jeep off road. Nothing to brag about by your standards there but I did it at an OHV park in Indiana and also in Wyoming. And yes, mine has ORA-2. But it also comes with acceptance of its limitations, such as lower speed and reduced articulation. ORA-2 is not meant for anything but negotiating over rocks and fording water, not for rally raid, Dakar style at high speeds.

When I asked you the question I had just finished reading an article on the Dakar rally. It was won by a RWD car. Yes fantastic achievement but it comes with a bit of cheating: much bigger tires (37" allowed for RWD vs. 33" for 4WD) and a 550 kg (yeah, kilogram) lower minimum weight than the 4WD. Which got me thinking why do manufacturers like to struggle by looking at highly customized one -off models like the RWD Peugeot or you with the QT-1 and so many more add-ons when they could achieve the same off road prowess much easier, by working from an existing proven platform like their WRC cars (or a Jeep with a low range gearbox) ?
