Assateague beach

Took my WK2 out to the beach, was a little worried after reading about others issues getting stuck in sand but it performed great! Much smoother ride than our wrangler was :-)ImageUploadedByJeepGarage1398033061.953365.jpg

Re: Assateague beach

How is the beach there? Last year I frequented the Delaware beaches. Assateague isn't that much further.

Re: Assateague beach

Great, the beach is clean, gets pretty crowded with surf fishers in the summer. Nice sandy borrow and sand bars 30~49 yards from shore. Sand is very soft, make sure to air down if you drive on the beach

How are the waves up that way? Looks pretty tame.

Re: Assateague beach

Yeah, maybe 3~4 feet and 8 second period, makes it a workout to get out there. Best I've seen was maybe 4~5 feed and 10 seconds. The waves are pretty mushy and break quick. We come because beggars can't be choosers and OBX is an extra 2 hour drive each way... A bit too cold right now too, 46 degree water, we only lasted 20 min before we called it quits and got out of the water :-)

Re: Assateague beach

The Assateague and Chincoteague Islands are awesome. The marshes are phenomenal. I haven't been there in a while, are they doing much to control erosion on Assateague?

Re: Assateague beach

I heading to the obx soon. Still contemplating a beach driving expedition. My jeep has 3kish on the odo and I'm still in the wash it every 3 days mode so the thought of sand infiltrating my interior makes me cringe. Hoping the house I've got has a good sandbar waiting for me.

I've never been up your way, is there good surfing up there during the summer months?

haha, just get some floor mats, It'll still get dirty but you can convince yourself it doesn't get too bad because of them :-P

if you drive on the beach much i suggest stopping by a car wash afterwards and hosing off the underside and the engine bay, good to get that salt off and knock any sand out of moving bits. just dont pressure wash the crap out of it!

surfing is mediocre but its all I've got so its good enough for me. It used to be pretty decent at Indian River Inlet but they dredged it so the break is not really there any more.... plus they apparently stirred up some algae or something which is giving people ear infections which surf there.... i can't vouch for that, just heard it from the guys at one of the local surf shops.

if you catch the days right before or after a hurricane you can get some decent surf but you're still dealing with a short period and a quick break.

...but I'm no expert, only been surfing for 2~3 years now. have fun!

oh yeah, by the way, water is 45 degrees now, we only lasted 30 min before we called it quits, will come back once its 50 or more!

Thanks dude, yeah, they are 255/75/17 Wrangler SR-A tires off of a 2011 wrangler. They don't have tpms which is a little annoying since there is alway a warning on the dash. I painted the wheels with black rustoleum truck liner which turned out pretty well. The main reason I wanted them was so I could air down for driving on the beach and off road.
