Re: Death Valley Trip

My ZJ had been to Death Valley multiple times. I hope to take the 2011 WK2 there soon.

On the Ghost Town Jeep Jamboree in central Nevada rocks took out three P-rated all-terrain stock tires. It was on my wife's Wrangler ... I had to buy her a new set of tires (plus spare)!! Our Jeeps have had LT-rated tires since that experience!!!

Re: Death Valley Trip

Impressive that you went off-roading with the stock 20" and the Fortera's (at least that's what it looks like) Also how'd they hold up? Looks from that last pic like you dropped a tire during the trip

Re: Death Valley Trip

Yeah, I took it out with the stock 20" Forteras - I had the guy at the tire shop give me a quote on some off road wheels and tires while they did the replacement He mentioned that I would have to take it to them to reprogram the computer to read the new tire pressure sensors every time I swapped between on/off road sets. Can anyone confirm that?

The funny thing is that all the off-roading went fine. It was on the drive back to camp on the "nice" gravel road that I got the flat. I was cruising along at about 35 mph there was a large rock with a jagged edge hanging out over the right side of the road - it sliced right through the sidewall. The Kumho spare got me all the way back home (to the Bay Area) via Sequoia National Park. Glad I didn't have to deal with a second flat out in the middle of nowhere!

I was on Steel Pass (south of the Eureka Dunes). If anyone can get their Grand Cherokee through that canyon, they are braver than me - I chickened out on last (third) little climb (I couldn't see any way to get through without scratching the side of the vehicle) and had to back it most of the way down. I was really impressed by how easily it got me around though - never would have dreamed of doing that in my old 2 wheel drive Mountaineer.

One more thing...

My favorite part about this week (apart from dirtying the Jeep of course) was accomplishing the impossible... I FOUND GOOD BBQ IN CALIFORNIA!!! I moved here from Texas about 3 years ago and the selection has been pathetic! If you're ever in Death Valley near the dunes, take the Big Pine exit out of the park and make your way to Dick's Smoke Wagon (310 N. Main St., Big Pine, CA 93513) and order the Glamis - maybe the best sandwich I've ever had - don't ask what's on it, it will take too long to describe...just eat it!
