Re: Great Sand Dunes

Nice photos, Moose.
My question is...what brand crossbars did you use to make the roof rack?

I'll be taking my wk2 to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon this year.

Ha! That's for Winter Park, but you may have started something, Widespread Panic is pretty popular here in CO.

Uh, if you're referring to the Dunes, they top out at about 800' vertical from the base.

These are Yakima cross bars and towers on a Rack Attack roof track. Both Yak and Thule now make tower feet that fit the stock WK2 tracks. Given you're long distance road trip you may consider a clamshell for the roof top as well for extra gear and whatnot, they work great and are reasonably aero.

It's hard to describe how spectacular the Grand Canyon is, you just gotta see it. Also recommend getting down into it on a hike/camp or on horseback if your group will allow the adventure. I still want to raft down it. Also consider what other destinations you may want to include in a road trip to the West such as Hoover Dam, Four Corners, Moab/Arches National Park, etc. Tons of great stuff. Enjoy.

Re: Great Sand Dunes

I rafted the Grand Canyon in 1978. It took 8 amazing days. I hiked down, slept on the bottom and hiked back out in 1972. Of course it is deeper now due to erosion!

Add Monument Valley for the scenery used in so many Westerns.

Yes, definitely make a trip to Monument valley. But, please make sure you have lot of windshield wiper fluid.

Back in 2007, wife and I went camping at Mesa Verde. We took a drive to 4 corners and Monument valley. It had rained heavily the night before and there were lot of big puddles everywhere. So, I start driving in every puddle and my ZJ was almost "red" in color. While driving back out of the park, I hit one big puddle and the red mud was all over the windshield including side windows and at the same time, I had run out of windshield wiper fluid. I cud see nothing outside and had to pull over and use bottled water (was very little left with us) to clean a small area on windshield so I can drive to a gas station.

I should have a picture of it somewhere... I will post if I find it.

Re: Great Sand Dunes

I've seen these around, and based on the other jamband stickers on the vehicle, I don't think they meant ski resort

BTW, I was showing my wife your pictures, but mostly because I want your wheels for my Inferno Red.

Yes, the GC is awesome. I've been there so many times I haven't even tried to keep track. I can tell you I've hiked to the bottom 6 times, one trip rim to rim, done the 8 day raft trip, seen the "staged" hold up on the train ride, and a couple of helicopter rides as well.

And I've been to Toroweap Point once, but this time I'll be in my own Jeep, and will be able to stay there as song as I want...which will be more than just overnight which I was able to talk someone into doing the last time. That's the main reason I bought a new WK2. Pennsylvania to Toroweap Point.

Now, I'll need cross bars--bare minimum. Thanks.

Re: Great Sand Dunes

Incredible! I can't think of a better advertisement for the JGC - your pics should be in a brochure.

Re: Great Sand Dunes

I hope you don't mind if I add a couple of photos Moose. I just want to emphasize the size of these things, it is hard to get your brain around, even in person.

The black specks on, and near the top of this section, are people:

A closer look...

One more, note the specks up top:

That's a big ass pile of sand.

Re: Great Sand Dunes

Great pics Moosehead! How far up Medano Pass road did you go? We are heading down there for the Memorial Day holiday next weekend. I have a WK2 Laredo with QT2 but NO Quadralift and have read mixed reports on the conditions of the sand past the Castle Creek picnic area. I have not been able to find a recent report but some older ones claim the ruts in the sand are 8-10 inches deep past Castle Creek and in that case I am afraid I would bottom out the entire vehicle. Any info would be helpful. Thanks!
