HEMI real life mpg on WK2

What is the realistic mpg you guys are getting or seeing reported on a hemi with %80 city driving? Does the big engine help pull the jeep along resulting in less strain and fuel consumption or does it just waste power while 3.6 Penstar can easily pull it?

In other vehicles (mainly pick ups) i have seen virtually no reduction in mpg because 5.7 helped carry the heavy vehicle and smaller engines just struggled, resulting in more consumption.

*sorry, wrong section, can someone please move it? Did not realize I was in show-off section.

Re: HEMI real life mpg on WK2

I've got 560 miles on my 2012 HEMI and am averaging 18.3 MPG with 60-70% highway driving thus far. Also, a while back I compiled the averages of the HEMI vs V6 MPG according to posters in this thread:

WK2 Hemi vs V6 MPG Compilation (results inside)

Re: HEMI real life mpg on WK2

Most of my driving is city (85-90%) and I'm "enjoying" the Hemi... which is why I'm averaging 12.7 on my most current tank (1500 miles). It gets the same mileage as my 2010 Town & Country 4.0 6 cyl... which had to work hard to get moving.

Even with 360 HP, 5100 pounds is a lot of weight to move around. With the 6 cyl, I think it would have to work harder and get about the same mileage. Hope this helps

Re: HEMI real life mpg on WK2

New v-6 gets significantly better mileage than the Hemi. (+4 mpg).

Hemi has better sound, torque, towing capacity, as well as the ability to hold a gear on uphills or acceleration.

V-6 transmission hunts around a bit more, and sound is not fulfilling, but I am getting between 19-25 mpg in all around driving according to EVIC.

Re: HEMI real life mpg on WK2

Thank you guys.
I am surprised at the difference. Now not only the price, but also mpg is a disadvantage of hemi (or SRT), in addition to urge to drive it like it's meant to be driven..
I have an 04 KJ and I am getting exactly 16mpg with 75/25% city/hwy and KJ is also a heavy vehicle. I guess Hemi does its magic if you got a lot of people or towing. Otherwise it is not a good choice, and it is only 3mpg.

Does WK2's hemi has that active cylinder turn-off?

I have the V6. Unlike my 3 older V6 JGCs, I enjoy the little growl the Pentastar presents upon acceleration. The performance boost of the V6 (especially in mid-gears) is quite noticeable over my previous Jeeps.

Not a Hemi, but quite good for me and my driving needs.

Re: HEMI real life mpg on WK2

I'm on the fence between v6 and v8. I've had previous GC with both the 4.0 I6 and an 06 4.7L . How would you say the new v6 compares to these previous engines? I'm guessing it would be on par with the 4.7L...I've had very little seat time with a new one.

Re: HEMI real life mpg on WK2

I can only compare to my 2000 & 2004 JGC 4.0L V6.

Definite power boost in the new 3.6L Pentastar in my 2011 Limited.

Better MPGs as well - easily averaging >19 mixed, 23+ highway. Prior jeeps were 14-16 mixed and 19 highway max, with a tailwind.

Re: HEMI real life mpg on WK2

I've only got a little over 500 miles on my 2011 X V6 and I'm averaging 22.1 according to the EVIC. I've got a 50 mile round trip commute to work, about 75% of that is freeway. Compaired to my old XK with the 3.7L I'd hit 18 if I was luckly, heck, even my wifes Journey with the old 3.7L only gets about 19 but her drive is all city. I couldnt be happier with the milage and the power from the pentastar.

Re: HEMI real life mpg on WK2

Just in from a round trip to BWI airport(211 miles). At speeds mostly 70mph my hemi gives 22.Dropping back to 65 gives 2 more,(got passed too much). However in town and around to work and such, my foot is responsible for the 14 or 15 it gets. But it's so much FUN !!!!

I know there's a bigger difference in town, but the fact I keep hearing of 22mpg hwy with the hemi is making me lean towards it.

Re: HEMI real life mpg on WK2

I'm getting 12.5-13.5 in my 5.7 with about 90% city driving, overall a little disappointed as I got better mileage in my '06 SRT8 and could actually tell I had a V8 under the hood. I do get much better mileage on the highway, about 19-22.
