I should note that i've never understood the appeal of a lowered SUV...you take a very capable and comfortable vehicle and remove the capability and the comfort.

Agreed. I have a small suspension lift and A/T tires on my current daily driver and it's just as quiet and comfortable as it was the day I drove it off the dealership lot. I expected the A/T tires to be louder than the OEM tires, but I honestly couldn't even tell any difference at all.
Now mud tires like the ones pictures are definitely going to produce some road noise...no doubt about it.
