Re: pics of overland very stuck in mud...

Yup the outside fender wells are carpeted for noise reduction. Personally I think the WK's had better insulation inside the fenders, there sure is a lot of tire noise on the new ones.

i've been waiting for the excavator roof rack. oh well.

nothing made it past that this time. far too wet. there is a way around that little hill but i though i could take it.

the excavator just got here from United Rentals... hopefully its big enough. i don't want to have to pull one of my own off a job for this. lets see what happens...

Okay, wait...this is new info for me. When you say the "outside" fender wells, where exactly do you mean?

PS. I got some red mud in there on the trip to CO and it sprayed right out with the hose, easier than any of the plastic liners on previous vehicles.

Re: pics of overland very stuck in mud...

3 things:

1. kudos for getting it dirty!

2. ground clearance and M/T tires are your friend.

3. good luck getting it out.

Re: pics of overland very stuck in mud...

so just to wrap this adventure up...
she's out. it was not easy. the excavator was almost not powerful enough. all my machine operator tricks went into this one to git r done. would have been easier, but my rocking back and forth not only triggered the "service 4WD" light, abs light, and ESP light, it also made my grand cherokee rear wheel drive. as a result, it had to be towed out of this swamp the WHOLE way. quarter mile through tight trees and tight bends. not easy. the rubber tracks wouldn't hook up some spots, so i had to drop the blade and just pull it a boom's length at a time, relocating a little further each time.
but its done.
and i got my 4x4 back just as i pulled on to the pavement. i was mad enough that it disengaged itself, but that i got it back after i was done needing it was comical.
here's a few of the recovery.

lessons learned:

1) this is not a TJ.
2) Snow tires do not a mud tire make
3) +1" tires do not a lift kit make
4) electronic 4x4 is not to be trusted
5) install front tow hooks
6) use that thing inside your head when deciding if you can make it through. not just the right foot.

Re: pics of overland very stuck in mud...

glad you got her out. awesome story. i could envision inchworming the backhoe by dropping the blade and crawling out. hope the WK2 is squared away.

that second shot is JOTM worthy.

Re: pics of overland very stuck in mud...
