Mine did it once on the beach when it was beached on its belly.

Another possibility is mud between the ABS sensors and sensor wheels on the driveshaft. Less likely though.

Good points, but I would think if the system has a "WTF" moment and shuts down to prevent damage, it should come back online upon car restart.

Maybe mud caking up the sensors caused the system to shut down as necessary data to determine wheel slippage was not available. If this is the case then a lot of tech dependent 4wd systems would have suffered the same fate in similar circumstances.

I agree. Most wheel speed sensors and "hall effect" sensors and they should still operate effectively even if they get caked with mud. That's because they sense metal and the absence of metal as it passes by the sensor. Mud really shouldn't render them inoperable.

i'd almost agree with you... driver's FAULT yes... error, no. rocking a truck out of a hole is not an uncommon maneuver, and if done properly, shouldn't cause damage. i'm not new to this sort of predicament either, my TJ and i have gotten into it plenty of times. no doubt i caused the fault, but my technique is nothing new to off roading. and street tires, yea no excuse there. i woulda needed paddle tires to get out of that one.

but yes, i'd say the computer had a serious WTF moment in there. no question that i was stuck somewhere that was solidly beyond this truck's capabilities in stock form. i guess it's just that this is an AWD system, not a fully mechanical 4wd system.

Re: pics of overland very stuck in mud...

Yeah, no driver error in this situation. You definitely sound like you have some experience. And it seems you felt you had some pretty capable rigs with you that would bail you out when you hit a rough spot.

Sometimes things just don't go according to plan.

I'm beginning to think the WK2 maybe too heavy and too dependent on tech for 4WD functionality. It seems like it just won't be able to go off-road like it's predecessors, no matter what Jeep marketing tells us. I'm old school, I like a lever for 4-lo lock and I like solid axles with mechanical clutches to close the diffs when needed.

When I get my WK2, forest trails will be the most I'd subject her to. But I do have high expectations for foul weather.

Wow, quite the adventure. You boldly went where no WK2 has gone before, hats off for even attempting it!
Reminds me of the time back in 1984 when my brother and I buried my dad's new Grand Wagoneer in a very similar situation, but we were four miles back in the woods on our way to a lake for some fishing.

WOW... thats some sticky mud... but I agree... your tires are not suited for those trail conditions... The factory tires are like pizza cutters in that mud... Still PROPS for getting it dirty!

SPEED SAFE, NICK

Re: pics of overland very stuck in mud...

O.k. So lets recap what we have learned so far from the brave souls on this forum.

The new WK2 can't go through water - Got it!
The new WK2 can't be driven on sand - OK!
The new WK2 can't be driven through mud - Check!

Hopefully it can go over rocks. I will find out in Moab this spring!
