Re: Pics of Overland with roof bike rack

Now that my eyes have stopped bleeding from reading MSCA's lucid posts, I now also realize what a mistake it was to buy the WK2.

Oh snap.

Plus, those damn quick releases aren't really that quick, takes at least 5-10 seconds. Who minds rebuilding really expensive hubs, headsets, bottom brackets, drivetrains, and brakes from the mung that collects off the back, heck we can just stay in when the weather turns south. Just wish we had known sooner.
Don't get all butt hurt because I posted the drawbacks of using a roof mounted rack for bikes. Like I said, it's a personal choice and you're obviously free to use whatever type of rack you want. At the same time, you can't deny that it is quicker and easier to just lift the bike a few feet off the ground and put it on a hitch rack.

As for the millions of SUV owners that you mentioned....well, I'd estimate that 95% of them opt for a hitch rack instead of a roof rack, at least from what I've seen over the last few years. I rarely see an SUV with bikes on the roof, simply because they're not as easy to use. I do see one occasionally though....and every once in a while I see one on a car, which makes more sense to me because cars have much lower roof lines and don't usually have hitches.

Easy for you to say, you didn't make the idiotic mistake of buying a WK2 and a roof rack.

Wow, you do clearly have issues. What does an opinion on mounting a mountain bike have to do with the WK2? And why do you get so defensive when someone posts something that you don't agree with? It's like I touched a nerve or something by suggesting that a hitch rack is easier and more practical than a roof rack.

BTW, I love my roof rack for the ability to carry my kayak and my skis. But my bike is better on my hitch rack. In fact, I've carried two kayaks on my roof and two mountain bikes on my hitch at the same time on several occasions. What's so hard to understand about that?

Oh, don't worry...you can use your roof rack for plenty of purposes. And if you ever take your blinders off, you can still use a hitch rack for your bike (if you have one) or put it up on your roof if you really want to. That's the nice thing about having choices.

You said more than just......"suggesting that a hitch rack is easier and more practical than a roof rack"

What you did say is...."Are you telling me that you can put your bike up on that rack without having to stand on something? There's no way you can do that unless you're 8 feet tall"

Thats a little different sentiment.

I can tell you plain and simply that I take my bikes down without standing on anything effortlessly. And have been for all 3 of my GC's. Additionally this past september at a century ride here in ny of the 500 vehicles, 80% had their bikes on the roof. Just the facts ma'am.

Hmm...okay, if you say so. I'd love to see that some time. You must have the longest arms in human history.

Tell you what, post a video on YouTube of you doing that and I'll PayPal you a hundred bucks. I gotta see how effortlessly you manage to lift and secure a mountain bike on top of your WK2 without standing on something. So go ahead...it's an easy C note for you.

Sure, what do you want to bet?

I'll bet you he doesn't post a video of him effortlessly securing his mountain bike to the roof rack on his WK2.

LOL, waxing the roof only means you can touch the top of the roof. Securing a mountain bike means that you have to be able to reach WELL above the top of the roof, not only to place the bike, but also to secure it. Good luck with that....

Like I said, he won't post the video because he can't do what he claims. I'm willing to put money on it....

Hahahahaha... this is going to be a riot. Imagine someone who is 6'4" tall effortlessly standing on the ground to lift and secure that bike on that rack! I got my money where my mouth is...
