For desert I strongly recommend kill devils frozen custard and beach fries. Top notch fatty food.

Beachfront is awesome, I'd set up right off the back porch if it were me. But if you want to conquer the dunes hit Oregon inlet or further south down hwy 12. Great beaches just outside of salvo, Avon, buxton and hatteras village. All are equally awesome for fishing, surfing, swimming & beach driving. If you want a bigger sand driving challenge head to corova. be careful down there though. The jeep can do it as long as there is zero user error.

The towns on hatteras island are a lot less commercialized than nags head and KDH but still very nice. No big crowds and pretty much no noise other than the ocean when on the beach, here's a pic of how few people are around us today....
Man, should've hit me up! Though it was a busy weekend I def would've been down for a few beers if anything.

Awful Arthur's in Kill Devil Hills is a fun place. Not the most creative menu, but always a good time.

Check out Sam and Omies a bar at Whale Bone Junction at the most southern part of Nags Head. Best clam chowder, cold beer and a good juke box.
Everyone is forgetting my job, which even before I worked there, it is one of my favorite places to eat and drink! The Brewing Station. Can't miss it there's a giant windmill out back (mp 8.5). Also JKs has absolutely delicious dry rub ribs and great food all around. They are in KDH and Corolla.

Oct1-Apr30 alot of areas open up for beach driving but if you do it becareful bc the beaches in KDH and what not are SUPER soft and aren't as wide as the southern beaches and Corova. You DO NOT want to get stuck with high tide approaching Here's the rules and regulations for the beach driving here

More sand love....

The weather has been perfect this week so far and as for Sam and omies, I'm a fan. Next time I'm there I'm ordering the chowder. I can already attest to the coldness of the beer there though. Good stuff.

I'm also a fan of awful art. Good seafood and definitely a good atmosphere.

Glad you guys enjoy the beach pics. I'll try and post one or two more if I can find something creative. Wish me luck!

Re: Sand domination @ Oregon inlet

I just got back last night from OBX. My in-laws have a home in Manteo which makes going to the Outer Banks a breeze. We headed down to Hatteras to find warmer water for kids. Water temp at Nags Head was 60 deg . Drove the 40 minutes to Avon pier, water temp 74 . On the way back I decided I wanted to drive on the beach at marker 34 I headed in. Approach road to dunes was packed like cement so I didn't air down...mistake. As soon as I got through the dune it was nothing but powder and deep ruts. Some of these 4x4 down here are sky high w/ huge tires. I kept my momentum up and made it along for awhile looking for a firm spot to take some pictures (If I figure out how to post them I will). Got the shots now back to the beach. I kept asking myself "where is the next cut through to the highway", answer 6 miles. I'm like half way in this trip, doing okay, to avoid some huge ruts I head down toward the surf line. I have to drive around a suburban that is placed at the high tide line to fish from. I figured the sand would be the firmest here...instantly I'm stuck. I suddenly have visions of a youtube clip showing my jeep getting hit by the wave and bobbing in the surf. I hop out and open the rear hatch, I'm trying to dig through all the beach crap to get to my air gauge. The guy with the suburban walks over..."you didn't air down...did ya". Me: a sheepish "...no". Nice guy, helps me air down to 20. I dig out a little sand in front and behind the tires. The guy says "back up a little then hit it". I back up a little( I know the rear tires are getting wet now) and hit it. The jeep climbs right up the bank the suburban is sitting on. I thank him and finish the beach drive tackling the big ruts, bouncing off the skid plates at times, no problem. I make it out and my wife who normally would be telling me exactly what kind of an A-hole I am says..."well, I guess the next time you'll try that is with your next wife". The moral of this story is AIR DOWN AT THE BEACH!!!.
p.s. I know that my son will wanting to go driving on the beach, just need to air down first.

Great pucker factor story upstang.

Though I believe the moral of the story is don't bring sand to the beach (aka the wife).

Uh, don't tell your wife or mine that I said that, OK?

Great post upstang. That's always the first thing people say to a sand stuck driver, "you didn't air down did you?" when they already know the answer is no.... I'm guilty of it too though so what can I say...

Anyway, last photos I'm posting for you guys, From the first ramp outside of salvo, hope you enjoy!!
