Thule Cargo Box

I was looking at getting a Thule Force XL cargo box for my 2014 Grand Cherokee. I have Thule Aeroblad cross bars.

Does anyone know if you can fit the cargo box on the top without having the rear door collide with the box when it is opening?

Re: Thule Cargo Box

Let's see, the thule box is 193cm roughly, so yes it should fit without touching the lift gate. I am basing this off of carrying snowboards up to 188cm without it touching, however it did touch (and scratch) when a 195+cm set of skis were on the rack. Hope this helps even though it clearly isn't based in calculus.

It should be able to be mounted with a little more front bias if there is any issue with it touching the lift gate.

This is the Yakima Skybox 16s. You can compare sizes on the Yakima site and Thule site to see if the box you want is bigger or smaller and determine if you'll have any issues (roughly).

GroundChuck

Many, many thanks for the pictures of the Skybox 16S on a 2014 Grand Cherokee. I have been trying for about a week to find out what fits without contacting the hatch. Yakima gave me one answer, Amazon says something different, and on and on.

The picture really helps.

Re: Thule Cargo Box

Does the Skybox 16S interfere with the NAV or SAT radio since it appears to cover the 'fin' antenna?

I have the Thule Force XL cargo box and it fits on the roof without touching the hatch. It's very close and each time I install it, I have to double and triple check to make sure it isn't going to collide once the hatch opens.

I have to have the extra space of the XL, otherwise I would have opted for a slightly smaller box. The front cross bars only go so far forward and so the adjustment on the cargo box is all the way toward the back. What this does is create more overhang in the front then I would like. However, it is within the design of the box and I recently went on a 9 hour trip (one way) to upstate NY from DC through high winds and high speeds (80+), and it held up just fine.

Re: Thule Cargo Box

thule fit guide is pretty reliable, the yakima not so much!

the xl boxes from thule would work fine and no issues with lift gate or nav/sat at all

this is a sonic xl

Groundchuck - Thanks for the reply. Just getting ready for a trip up through British Columbia all the way to Fairbanks and beyond. Going to take the Alaska Ferry back from Juneau.

Re: Thule Cargo Box

mfa - that is a sweet looking Summit :-) I am kind of partial to that color. I also really like the color of the roof box. My silver box is a carry over from a previous silver vehicle. I was thinking of selling the silver one to get a black one. After seeing the nice color match of the black I may have to get a black one. :-) Looks great!

Festone - Have a good trip. As others have said, when you finally get it set up an tightened down properly they are pretty solid on the roof. I was going West through Iowa at about 75-80 mph into a 35 mph head wind and it held on with no problems (although I wasn't really enjoying driving that fast into the head wind but its all about making good time :-).

Re: Thule Cargo Box

mfa81 - Can you please tell me what Thule fit kit you used with your cross bars? I've been trying to figure out which one to use but it seems like they have discontinued the fit kits that attached to the factory bars. Everything I see seems to want to attach to the doors. Thanks!
