Doug, Moab is not really a "park" or a organized trail area. It is a small town located between Arches and Canyon Land National parks.

Most of the 100's of bike and off-road trails in the area are what I would describe as free range trails. Most are old mining roads and trails used before the highways came into the area. You might see an occasional sign at a trail head but most likely not.

There is no set hours or gates or fees except in the National Parks.

Some trails are easy and some are down right dangerous.

If you are going by yourself I would suggest you try to hook up with someone or group in Moab and tag along with them. I the 8-9 years I have been going to the area there are some trails that I have been on in my lifted, airlocked Wrangler that I would never take my Overland on and some I would not do again mainly because I have done them once and don't care to risk it again.

Jeeping out there is kind of like swimming. You really don't want to do it alone.

It's a beautiful area it is hard to describe to people who have not seen it.

When are you going?

Bob, thanks for the info & insight for expectations. Gives a much better visual. I was assuming it was a regulated park with different category trails. Mainly wanting to enjoy some scenic off-road pleasure trails that provide a little challenge & thrill; not high & risky challenging... especially with shinny new GC & road tires.

Secondly, Desire to reach points of photo opportunities providing a "no civilized" scenic pano landscape shots and of the colorful scenic rocks. Will be packing ample photo equipment on the trip.

Have work related conf in LV in May and adding 1-2 weeks vaca to work our (Wife & myself) way down through Grand Canyon N & S sides; a bit of a SW loop heading back to IA. Lived in Mesa, AZ back in early 90's but haven't seen Canyon N Side, Hover Dam, or Moab area. Also want to see the new Canyon glass overlook, sounds very cool!!

Thanks for the info, very helpful!
I assume you live in the area and often play in the Moab?

I actually live in Indianapolis but have made 7-8 trips out to Moab in the past years. I am sure you will enjoy the area and there are a world of photo opportunities there.

Re: trip to Moab

Go here for the best Moab guidebook:

http://www.funtreks.com/utah-books/g...ls-2nd-edition

If you plan to use the guide book more than once, spend a little extra and get spiral binding.

Most popular trails are very well marked. Some of the lesser traveled trails aren't quite as well marked, so a good top map and GPS can help you figure out where you're at.

Well-built vehicles can usually find someone else to go with by looking for a friendly Jeeping group in the City Market parking lot starting around 8:30 am - not sure that option is viable for a stock WK2 (even if it has QuadraLift).

An expensive ($300+) option would be to contact Dan Mick (http://www.danmick.com/) for a private/semi-private tour. He's an expert and will help you get the most from your Jeeping adventure.
