Re: Jeep Destination Grand Event For WK2 at Belmont Racetrack (Nassau Co. Long Island

You missed a good event. I went early on Sunday morning (while Joe was just getting to bed probably). All I can say is WOW. I really like the new Jeep. It rides very nice, smooth and quiet (too quiet for me). The interior is a MUST SEE. The photos don't do it justice at all. You have to feel it to believe it. BTW, I love the new steering wheel and EVIC controls! Much improved for sure.

Exterior
Everyone will have grips about it but after 30-40 minutes with the new Jeep, I seemed to forget those grips. Some new stuff that's fun:
- sideview mirror signals
- blind-spot avoidance system
- rear parking sensors NOT in the chrome strip!!!
- headlights are SEXY.
- roof rails improved and streamlined

Interior
- better materials +++
- redesigned cup holders!!
- 2 part center console storage (small upper area w/larger cubicle underneath) + 12V charger inside (so you can charge your phone easily).
- ventilated "cool" seat option
- redesigned rear vents are nicer.
- rear seats fold down from a lever not a strap
- pannoramic sunroof is SWEET! Really lets the light into the interior.
- rear cargo area is much better too -- one lift up floor component, spare tire under it with 2 storage compartments. The little storage 'boxes' near the rear seats are gone.
- lots of speakers.
- center console stack flows with the dash better IMO.
- LOVE the new leather stitched dash on the Overland.

Engine
The V6 is smooth and perky. It's definitely better than the 4.7L in terms of power and torque. I can see 70% or more JGCs doing out with this motor.

The HEMI is pretty much the same as before. In the Overland and Laredos I drove, the HEMI was TOO quiet. I mean there's some hint of a HEMI in the exhaust note but it's very much muted IMO. Maybe I'm just used to my SRT8.

One thing I noted was the throttle response in both setups was BETTER than in my WK SRT8. There's an immediate response, albeit somewhat muted. In other words, once you depress the throttle, there's a response from the engine and movement but it felt as if the first 1/8 inch was like pre-determined throttle setting and there was no real effect until you pressed the pedal further. This was actually nice in casual driving. You could just slightly press the pedal and the Jeep would move easily (like driving in a parking lot). In normal traffic, I would suspect I would not have noticed it as much.

Driveline
Well, I do love the new SELECTOR knob (MMI or iDrive like in appearance). I was able to switch from AUTO to SNOW to SPORT on the fly in the Overland. I did notice that the Traction control idoit light came on in SNOW and SPORT.

There was a section where they had us drive over steel plates doused with soapy water to test the traction control. With the HEMI, I was able to get the wheels spinning real good only to have the traction control kick in and get me moving properly within like 20'. On the V6 version, I got less wheelspin and traction sooner.

Impressions
I had hoped to bring my wife along but she wasn't feeling well yesterday. My impressions of the 2011 Jeep are positive. As a Jeep owner, this model is a positive step forward in the evolution of the Jeep Grand Cherokee. It will compete for the near-luxury shopper (think Acura, Lexus, BMW, Audi) very well and at the other end, it will blow away the lesser CUVs (crossovers).

There was a Lexus 350, Honda Pilot and Chevy Equinox on hand to comparo-test drive. I'll point out the major 'wins' of each against the Jeep. The Lexus felt like it had more power yet the Jeep's interior beat it hands down. The Jeep also felt more poised over bumps. The Equinox had nothing over the Laredo IMO. It was smaller, less peppy and CHEAP on the inside. And the Pilot felt heavy and underpowered. I was not impressed with the interior at all. It did have 3rd row seating . . . meh.

Overall, the 2011 Jeep is a great move for Chrysler. It should keep the faithful happy and draw in some new blood as well.

I agree with all the above except the V6 has nowhere near the power of my 4.7. It feels better than the old V6 though.

Lots of pics on here:

Maybe the mods can put these threads together.
